UK Innovator Founder Visa Eliminates Exit Requirement

UK Innovator Founder Visa for Students: Britain Approves On-Shore Switch for International Graduates from 2025

The United Kingdom is preparing for one of its most transformative immigration changes in recent memory. Beginning 25 November 2025, international students will be permitted to switch directly to the UK Innovator Founder Visa for Students without returning to their home countries—an overhaul that rewrites a long-standing rule and signals a bold shift in Britain’s strategy to retain high-potential global graduates.

For years, the requirement to exit the UK before reapplying discouraged many student innovators from planting their entrepreneurial roots in Britain. Promising founders often returned home only to continue their careers elsewhere, resulting in a brain drain at the moment when their ideas were most ready to evolve.

This time, the UK is clearly repositioning itself. Officials state that the new rule is part of a deliberate push to ensure that students who arrive with talent leave as entrepreneurs, not missed opportunities. Any international student currently holding a valid Study visa will now be eligible to apply for the Innovator Founder route from within the country—no departure, no re-entry, and no bureaucratic detours.

What the UK Innovator Founder Visa for Students Is Designed For

At its core, the Innovator Founder visa is reserved for individuals who want to build an innovative, market-shifting business in Britain. The proposed idea must be original, commercially promising, and capable of scaling. To ensure quality and legitimacy, each business idea must be endorsed by an approved endorsing body—organisations appointed by the UK government to evaluate entrepreneurial potential.

Formerly known simply as the Innovator visa, this updated route provides far more flexibility, especially for early-stage founders who need room to experiment and grow without excessive financial barriers.

Eligibility Requirements for Switching to the Innovator Founder Route

Students aiming to transition to the Innovator Founder route must first have their business idea assessed. If the endorsing body confirms that the idea meets the pillars of innovation, viability, and scalability, the applicant receives an official endorsement letter.

Applicants must also:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Meet the English language requirement

  • Show sufficient personal savings to support themselves

  • Provide evidence of funding sources for new business ventures

  • Ensure their business plan is credible and entrepreneur-led

If the business is already endorsed under a previous visa, or if modifications have been approved by the endorsing body, additional investment funds may not be required.

Financial Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate that they have maintained at least £1,270 in personal savings for 28 consecutive days prior to applying. These funds must be personal—not investment capital or earnings from unauthorised work.

UK Innovator Founder Visa: Meeting the English Language Requirement

English proficiency must be proven through either:

  • A government-approved English language test

  • An English-taught academic qualification

  • Nationality from an English-speaking country

This ensures that founders can run their businesses, collaborate, and communicate effectively within the UK’s professional environment.

Length of Stay and Extension Rules

The Innovator Founder visa grants permission to stay for up to three years. Within that time, founders must meet their endorsing body at:

  • 12 months

  • 24 months

These check-ins determine whether the business is progressing. If the endorsing body withdraws support, the visa may be shortened.

Holders can extend their visa in three-year increments, with no limit on extensions. Crucially, after three years, applicants may become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)—a direct route to settlement.

Understanding the Application Process

Applications must be submitted online and differ based on location:

  1. Outside the UK – Applying to enter

  2. Inside the UK – Extending an existing visa

  3. Inside the UK – Switching from another visa category (including Study visas under the new rule)

Dependants—partners and children—can accompany applicants if they meet eligibility rules.

Processing Timelines

Typical decision times after identity verification and document submission:

  • 3 weeks when applying from outside the UK

  • 8 weeks when switching or extending within the UK

Priority processing may be available for an extra fee.

Costs Applicants Must Budget For

A complete breakdown of fees for the Innovator Founder route includes:

  • £1,274 per person (applications from outside the UK)

  • £1,590 per person (applications within the UK)

  • £1,000 for endorsement by an approved body

  • £500 per required check-in meeting (minimum two)

  • Healthcare surcharge (paid separately)

  • Biometric enrolment, free of charge

These fees ensure applicants understand the total financial commitment involved in starting a business in the UK.
