Turmeric Export Target 2030: Amit Shah’s Big Boost for Indian Spice Farmers
India Eyes Global Spice Leadership with Turmeric Export Target 2030
In a landmark move to empower India’s turmeric farmers and position the country as a global leader in spice exports, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday unveiled a bold vision by announcing a Turmeric Export Target 2030 of USD 1 billion. The announcement was made during the grand inauguration of the National Headquarters of the Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana—an event that marked a pivotal step in fulfilling a long-standing demand of turmeric farmers.
Speaking before a large and enthusiastic gathering, Shah highlighted the board’s strategic goals, which include enhancing the branding, marketing, packaging, and export potential of turmeric. “You will be surprised to know that the Indian government has set the goal of exporting USD one billion worth of turmeric by 2030,” Shah declared. “We are fully prepared, and this board will ensure that our farmers get the highest remunerative price for their produce.”
Turmeric: A Promise Fulfilled for Telangana’s Farmers
The inauguration of the Board comes as the fulfilment of a key promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections. Shah emphasised that the board is not just symbolic but a functional institution dedicated to supporting farmers through research and development, improving product quality, and establishing direct export linkages.
The creation of the board is expected to significantly uplift the turmeric economy in the region, particularly in Nizamabad, often referred to as the turmeric capital of India. The board will collaborate with scientists, agri-tech startups, and export bodies to develop sustainable farming techniques, value-added turmeric products, and global branding strategies.
PM Modi’s Commitment: Rs 200 Crore Boost
In line with this vision, the BJP’s Telangana unit announced earlier on X (formerly Twitter) that Prime Minister Modi had already sanctioned Rs 200 crores to support quality improvement, advanced cultivation methods, and farmer welfare. “The dream of Nizamabad’s turmeric farmers is now a reality,” the post read. “PM Modi has kept his promise.”
Turmeric: Political Resonance and Regional Significance
The demand for a dedicated board was not just an agricultural issue—it was a central election plank in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. D Arvind, BJP MP from Nizamabad, who had pledged to deliver the board, made headlines in 2019 by defeating K Kavitha, daughter of former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. Arvind’s victory in 2024 further consolidated the BJP’s position in Telangana, especially among farming communities.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, along with other key party leaders, welcomed Shah upon his arrival at Hyderabad’s Begumpet Airport, underscoring the importance the central government places on Telangana’s agricultural aspirations.
