Trump Signs Executive Order to Combat Antisemitism, Targeting Pro-Palestinian Activists

US President Trump Takes Action to Combat Antisemitism with New Executive Order

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a groundbreaking executive order aimed at combating antisemitism in the United States. This new directive calls for federal agencies to utilize every available legal tool to confront anti-Jewish discrimination and violence. Notably, the order targets pro-Palestinian activists, particularly those involved in demonstrations on US college campuses, and outlines steps to deport foreign nationals—including students on visas—who engage in unlawful activities during protests.

Federal Agencies to Take Action

The presidential order mandates that federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Secretary of State, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Education, collaborate in identifying “all civil and criminal authorities” to address anti-Semitic incidents. The agencies are given 60 days to submit their recommendations to the White House, which could shape how future investigations and legal actions are carried out.

The executive order also specifically urges the Department of Justice to investigate incidents of pro-Hamas graffiti and harassment, with a particular focus on incidents that take place on college campuses. According to the order, Jewish students have faced an alarming rise in discrimination, including denial of access to campus facilities, intimidation, and violent threats.

The executive order states that “it shall be the policy of the United States to combat antisemitism vigorously,” stressing the need to prosecute, deport, or hold accountable anyone found guilty of engaging in anti-Semitic harassment or violence.

Targeting Activists and Students with Visas

One of the more contentious aspects of the order is its focus on foreign nationals, especially students on visas, who participate in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The order directs federal agencies to monitor the activities of such individuals and investigate whether they are engaging in activities that could warrant their deportation under US immigration laws.

The order also asks government officials to ensure that higher education institutions are familiar with the grounds for inadmissibility under US immigration law (8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(3)) so that they can help identify and report foreign students and staff involved in unlawful activities.

This move is seen by many as an escalation of the government’s crackdown on activists who support Palestinian rights, particularly in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, which has seen tensions flare following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.

Trump’s Broader Strategy to Address Pro-Palestinian Protests

The executive order reflects a broader Republican strategy to punish US universities that allow pro-Palestinian protests. In fact, President Trump and other Republican leaders have long called for the deportation of students who support Hamas and other organizations considered to be terrorists. Just last week, Trump signed another order aimed at ensuring that aliens (foreign nationals) do not support “designated foreign terrorists,” further tightening restrictions on certain activist groups.

In addition to these executive actions, Republicans have threatened to pull federal funding from colleges that host pro-Palestinian demonstrations. This includes the possibility of stripping prestigious institutions of their federal accreditation if they fail to crack down on what is seen as antisemitic or pro-terrorist activity on campus.

The Consequences of the Executive Order by Trump

The executive order is part of a broader set of actions taken by the Trump administration to address what it sees as a rise in antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment within the US. In addition to this new crackdown, Trump has previously sought to freeze federal aid to universities, including a pause on the distribution of pending federal grants, as part of efforts to curb support for pro-Palestinian protests.

While the order has garnered support from those advocating for stronger measures against antisemitism, it has also sparked significant backlash. Critics argue that it could lead to increased surveillance and restrictions on free speech, especially on college campuses, where activism on social justice issues is widespread.
