By the 1980s, Chandroo had already ventured into distributing children’s educational books and Sesame Street products. But with the rise of CD-ROMs and new technology, sales began to decline. Around the same time, parents frequently asked him for recommendations for quality pre-schools—a need he recognized as a golden opportunity.
That realization sparked the idea to bring the Montessori method to Singapore. But when T Chandroo applied for the Modern Montessori International franchise in 1989, he faced initial rejection. The UK-based company feared its brand might lose credibility if exported. Yet, Chandroo’s persistence paid off when he convinced them by sending his wife and brother-in-law for training in London.
Even then, he faced another obstacle—he could not afford the £50,000 franchise fee. With honesty and humility, he proposed paying £10,000 upfront and the rest in installments. His sincerity was rewarded, and the journey began.
T Chandroo: Building the Montessori Legacy
Instead of opening a pre-school immediately, Chandroo strategically focused on training teachers first, educating parents, and spreading awareness about Montessori principles. By 1993, he launched the first MMI pre-school in Singapore, which became an instant success, enrolling 91 children within just two months despite higher fees compared to competitors.
His vision was clear: quality education that nurtures creativity, independence, and holistic growth. Over the years, T Chandroo expanded the MMI network to Malaysia, India, Nepal, and beyond. Today, MMI operates more than 70 pre-schools and training institutes across 14 countries, generating over $40 million in annual revenue, with ambitions to expand to 300 centers worldwide.
