Despite her early interest in space, Swati initially set her sights on a career in medicine, aspiring to become a pediatrician. However, fate had other plans in store for her.

A pivotal physics class during her teenage years proved to be a turning point, as Swati Mohan was drawn to the intricate laws governing the cosmos. Recognizing the boundless opportunities that engineering offered in the pursuit of space exploration, she made the bold decision to chart a new course towards the stars.

Academic Pursuits and Stellar Achievements

Swati Mohan’s academic journey took her across continents, where she pursued her passion for space exploration with unwavering determination. At Cornell University, she immersed herself in the study of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors.

It was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), however, where Swati’s potential truly blossomed. Under the mentorship of esteemed professors, she delved into the intricacies of on-orbit operations at MIT’s Space Systems Laboratory, contributing to groundbreaking projects like SPHERES and SWARM.

Leadership at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

In 2013, Swati Mohan’s journey reached new heights as she embarked on a career-defining role at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

Tasked with guiding the Mars 2020 mission as the Guidance & Controls Operations Lead, she assumed a leadership position that would shape the course of one of humanity’s most ambitious space exploration endeavors.

Pioneering the Path to Mars

Swati Mohan’s expertise proved indispensable in the intricate dance of space travel, where precision and accuracy are paramount. As the architect of the mission’s navigation system, she devised innovative solutions to navigate the Perseverance rover safely through the treacherous Martian terrain.

Her groundbreaking work, including the implementation of Terrain-Relative Navigation, ensured the rover’s successful touchdown on the Red Planet’s surface, marking a historic milestone in human exploration.

Celebrating Triumphs and Milestones

On February 18, 2021, the culmination of years of meticulous planning and dedication came to fruition as the Perseverance rover touched down on Mars. Swati Mohan’s steady voice echoed through the halls of mission control, announcing the momentous achievement with the iconic proclamation, “Touchdown is confirmed.”
