Suthasini Rajenderan: Singapore’s Inspiring Tamil Songstress

Suthasini Rajenderan: Redefining Tamil Music with R&B and Unshakable Courage

In a world where voices are often silenced by cyberbullies and societal expectations, Suthasini Rajenderan rises as a powerful symbol of artistic brilliance, courage, and unshakable authenticity. The Singaporean sensation has not only broken musical boundaries by infusing Tamil music with R&B and hip-hop elements, but she has also challenged deep-seated gender norms and stood firm against online hate with grace and creative retaliation.

Suthasini Rajenderan: From Vasantham Star to Global Aspirations

Suthasini’s journey to stardom began in 2011 when she won the coveted Vasantham Star title, capturing hearts with her soulful voice and magnetic stage presence. Since then, her musical path has taken her across borders—from reaching the finals of Malaysia’s Astro International Superstar 2015 to earning accolades in India’s Singing Stars.

Yet, it wasn’t just her vocal talent that made waves. She could evolve, experiment, and connect that solidified her place in the modern Tamil music scene. Suthasini Rajenderan didn’t settle for replicating; she chose to innovate.

“Every time I enter a new competition, I learn—not just from judges, but from my peers. Performing is never just about singing—it’s about how you entertain, how you connect,” she once shared.

Turning Hate Into Harmony

But like many women in the public eye, her rise came with resistance. With YouTube and social platforms becoming double-edged swords, Suthasini faced waves of cyberbullying, most of it attacking her appearance rather than her artistry.

Instead of cowering, she responded like only a true artist would. She transformed the hate into a viral Tamil song, crafted entirely from hate comments she had received. This bold act not only turned the narrative around but also called out online trolls hiding behind their screens.

“There are two types of criticism—constructive and destructive. The latter says more about the critic than the person being criticized,” she emphasized.

By naming and shaming cyberbullies in her music, she sent a clear message: your words may be cruel, but they will not control my narrative.

Suthasini Rajenderan: Creating a New Musical Identity

Suthasini’s musical style defies tradition and stereotypes. Rooted in Indian classical music and influenced by the soulful rhythms of global R&B and hip-hop legends like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, and Nicki Minaj, her sound is experimental, fearless, and refreshingly modern.

“I infuse Indian music with R&B and hip-hop touches. My music is always relatable and thought-provoking,” she explains.

This genre-blending style positions her as a pioneer in redefining what Tamil music can sound like in the 21st century. Whether she’s performing live on stage or composing in the studio, Suthasini Rajenderan brings an authentic voice that speaks to the youth, especially young girls, encouraging them to embrace their flaws and fears and turn them into strengths.

Breaking Barriers: A Historic Deepavali Composition

In 2024, Suthasini shattered another glass ceiling by becoming the first female artist to compose Mediacorp’s official Deepavali song, titled Vanthuruchu Deepavali. For 13 consecutive years, the song had always been composed by male musicians. At the 14th year, the mould was finally broken.

This wasn’t just a musical win—it was a monumental milestone for women in the creative arts. Collaborating with her husband, Vishnu Balaji, and young local talents, Suthasini brought to life a festive anthem that echoed empowerment, tradition, and a modern beat.

“It takes time for women to gain trust in this industry. We’re catching up—and we’re here to stay,” she said with quiet conviction.

A Voice That Moves with Purpose

Beyond fame, Suthasini Rajenderan has a purpose: to be an international artist who uses music to inspire change. Her songs aren’t just melodies; they’re messages. From mental health to self-worth, and from cultural pride to social resistance, her lyrics speak directly to the listener’s soul.

Her upcoming EP is set to further disrupt the Indian music landscape with genre-defying soundscapes. Though still in progress, it promises to be unlike anything ever heard in the Tamil music scene.

“I want my music to be global—not just in reach, but in impact,” she affirms.
