Early Life of Steel Banglez: A Symphony of Cultures
Growing up in a Sikh family, Steel Banglez was immersed in a rich tapestry of cultural influences. His mother, a music teacher, surrounded him with traditional Indian instruments like harmoniums and tablas, laying the foundation for his musical journey.
Beyond his Indian Punjabi heritage, Steel Banglez also embraces his Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan roots, reflecting a diverse cultural background that has significantly influenced his sound.
At just ten years old, he began DJing jungle music with his brothers, quickly gaining recognition in East London’s vibrant music scene. His talent and passion led him to pirate radio station Mystic FM, where he honed his skills and deepened his love for music production.
It wasn’t long before he was introduced to the audio workstation Fruity Loops, marking the beginning of his journey as a producer. His first track, “Dreams,” created for his neighbor, the grime artist D Double E, showcased his burgeoning talent and set the stage for future success.

Steel Banglez’s promising career faced a severe setback when he was imprisoned at 17 for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger lives. During his three-year incarceration, he befriended rappers Fix Dot’M, Yung Meth, and Colours Miyagi, producing beats for them on a keyboard. This period of adversity became a crucible for his musical evolution, solidifying his focus on rap and expanding his influence within the London rap scene.
Upon his release, Steel Banglez re-entered the music world with renewed determination. He contributed to Fix Dot’M and Yung Meth’s mixtape “A Fix of Meth” and collaborated on “Tidal Wave” with Yung Meth and Ghetts, released on SB.TV.
His home studio became a hub for aspiring artists, with high-profile names like Wiley and Roll Deep recording their vocals over his beats. Despite facing challenges, including the deportation of Cashtastic, for whom he was producing an album, Steel Banglez persevered, navigating a “mad depressed stage” and emerging stronger.
Breakthrough and Chart Success
In 2015, a chance encounter with MoStack’s track “No Buddy” reignited Steel Banglez’s creative spark. Their collaboration on MoStack’s debut mixtape “Gangster with Banter” marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership. A pivotal moment came on New Year’s Eve of 2015 when Steel Banglez discovered Birmingham rapper MIST, whose use of Punjabi phrases resonated deeply with him.
This connection led to the production of MIST’s breakthrough EP “M I S to the T” in 2016 and his Warner Bros. Records debut “Diamond in the Dirt” in 2018, featuring notable artists like MoStack, Jessie Ware, and Haile from WSTRN.
Steel Banglez’s production prowess extended beyond individual artists. He collaborated with Jae5 on “Fisherman” from J Hus’ acclaimed debut album “Common Sense,” showcasing his ability to craft hits across genres.
His transition from producer to lead artist gained momentum with the release of “Money” in March 2017, featuring friends and collaborators like MoStack, MIST, Haile, and Abra Cadabra. The follow-up single “Bad,” featuring Yungen, Mr Eazi, and Not3s, climbed the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 29 and earning a Silver certification from the BPI.

He was named Producer of the Year at the GRM Daily’s Rated Awards in 2017 and won Best Non-Traditional Asian Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards (BAMA) in 2018 and 2019.
