Slovakia Moves to Ease Immigration Process with National Visa Extension

In a significant move aimed at streamlining immigration processes and boosting international cooperation, the Slovak government has announced a new legislative proposal to extend the validity of national visas for third-country nationals. If approved by Parliament, the Slovakia national visa extension will increase the current 90-day limit to 120 days, providing applicants with more time to secure vital residence permits.

The proposal, championed by Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, received Cabinet approval on May 21, 2025. The Ministry of Interior emphasized that this extension is not merely a technical adjustment but a strategic decision designed to address the backlog in appointments and reduce congestion at foreign police departments.

“The validity period of a national visa currently granted to third-country nationals for 90 days is to be extended to 120 days. The aim is to provide more time to secure an appointment in the reservation system, the use of which will be newly mandatory by law,” the Ministry of Interior stated.

The new reservation system, once enforced by law, will become a compulsory step for all applicants pursuing long-term stays in Slovakia. The Slovakia national visa extension ensures that individuals won’t lose their chance for legal residency due to delays in accessing appointments—a growing issue as Slovakia sees a surge in demand from foreign workers.

Supporting Economic Growth and Global Ties

This policy shift is not just about immigration logistics; it’s also a key component of Slovakia’s larger vision for economic development and international collaboration. Thousands of foreign nationals, particularly skilled and unskilled workers, stand to benefit from the extended visa validity.

In 2023 alone, Eurostat data shows Slovakia issued 642,710 residence permits, with employment-related permits accounting for 225,237 of those. The Slovakia national visa extension aims to accommodate this growing demand more efficiently.

In tandem with these legislative updates, Slovakia is actively seeking to expand its international partnerships, particularly with China. Officials have indicated plans to issue up to 1,000 national visas annually to Chinese passport holders. Moreover, measures are being explored to ease the visa process for Chinese entrepreneurs looking to invest or launch ventures in Slovakia.

These efforts are part of a broader initiative to attract foreign talent and entrepreneurial energy, which the Slovak government views as essential for future economic growth.

“By facilitating national visa rules for Chinese entrepreneurs, Slovakia wants to boost its economic growth and, at the same time, strengthen the relationship between the two countries,” authorities noted.

What Happens Next?

While the Cabinet has given its nod to the proposal, it now awaits approval from Parliament. If the legislation passes, the Slovakia national visa extension will officially take effect on July 1, 2025.
