She graduated with a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Madras, one of India’s most prestigious institutions. Her academic brilliance led her to pursue an MS in Materials Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an MBA from Stanford University, two of the most revered universities in the world. After completing her master’s at MIT, Shuba Kumar had a world of opportunities before her in the United States. Yet, she made a bold and selfless choice—to return to India and contribute to its industrial growth. She joined Natesan Synchrocones Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, in its formative years and worked tirelessly to grow the business significantly within just three years.
Realizing that the next phase of her dream required global business acumen, she pursued her MBA at Stanford, determined to return equipped with the knowledge to transform Natesan into a globally competitive company. Her conviction to merge world-class education with national growth marked the beginning of an inspiring leadership journey.

After Stanford, Applied Materials, USA recognized her exceptional potential and appointed her to lead key functions of major business units—an extraordinary achievement for someone so young. In this role, Shuba created over $1 billion in new markets, significantly improved product quality and reliability, and earned several customer excellence awards.
Yet, despite her immense success in Silicon Valley, her heart remained in India. Her inner calling was to uplift people, build sustainable industries, and make a difference at the grassroots level.
Building a Global Legacy at Natesan Group
When Shuba Kumar returned to Natesan Synchrocones, the company was a modest build-to-print manufacturer serving primarily domestic automotive clients. Under her visionary leadership, Natesan evolved into a global powerhouse, ranking among the Top 5 manufacturers of steel synchronizer rings in the world, with customers spanning continents.
Her strategic foresight led to the establishment of the Kyowa Natesan Synchro Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a thriving Indo-Japanese joint venture. She further diversified Natesan into Aerospace, Defence, and Green Mobility, ensuring the company’s presence in future-ready industries.
Her leadership not only elevated Natesan’s business stature but also earned the company several prestigious recognitions, including the Government of India’s Technology Development Award, the ACMA Best Product Innovation Award, and multiple Global Excellence Awards from international clients.
Leadership Rooted in Purpose and People
To Shuba Kumar, leadership is not about authority—it’s about authenticity. She once said, “Ultimately, it is about being an authentic leader who cares for the team and creates a positive impact.” Her approach combines humility with high standards, earning her deep respect across the organization.
Her journey, however, was not without challenges. As a young woman entering a male-dominated manufacturing sector, she faced skepticism and resistance. Instead of being discouraged, she learned from her colleagues, understood their systems, and introduced better ways of working. When she implemented ISO 9000 systems in 1996, it set a new benchmark for operational excellence.
A defining moment came in 1998 when she convinced senior executives of a major client to adopt a technologically superior—and costlier—product. This victory not only showcased her technical prowess and persuasive communication but also proved that innovation, when driven by conviction, can conquer biases.

Shuba Kumar is a powerful advocate for gender inclusivity in manufacturing and technology. She firmly believes that while challenges persist, the opportunities for women today are far greater than before. Beyond the boardroom, Shuba Kumar dedicates her time and resources to education and community development. She and her family are patrons of a Tamil-medium Government school, and under her guidance, Natesan Group has adopted a Government school in Uttarakhand, established education centres in six villages, and provided internships for rural students at IIT Madras’s Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing.
Her vision is clear—to bridge the rural-urban education gap and ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality learning and opportunities.
