Early Life and Education of Seema Nanda

Seema Nanda’s roots trace back to Punjab, with her parents settling in the United States in the early 1970s. Both accomplished dentists instilled in her the values of hard work and determination. Nanda spent her formative years in West Simsbury, Connecticut, shaping her character at the prestigious Westminster School.

Her academic pursuits led her to Brown University, where she earned her A.B. in 1992, followed by a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1995. These formative years laid the groundwork for a career dedicated to public service and the pursuit of justice.

A Career of Impact

Nanda’s professional journey has been marked by significant roles in various government agencies. From 2007 to 2010, she served as a supervisory attorney at the National Labor Relations Board, showcasing her commitment to upholding workers’ rights.

Her tenure at the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, where she held positions such as senior trial attorney and acting deputy special counsel, further solidified her commitment to justice and equality.

In 2013, Nanda joined the Department of Labor, becoming the chief of staff and deputy chief of staff to Secretary of Labor Tom Perez. Her leadership skills were further evident when she assumed the role of CEO of the Democratic National Committee in July 2018, a position she held until May 2020.

Nominated and Confirmed

President Joe Biden recognized Nanda’s expertise and nominated her as the United States Solicitor of Labor on March 26, 2021. The Senate HELP Committee conducted hearings on April 29, 2021, and favorably reported her nomination to the Senate floor on May 12, 2021. On July 14, 2021, the Senate confirmed Nanda with a vote of 53-46, acknowledging her capabilities and dedication.

Tenure and Challenges

As the Solicitor of Labor, Seema Nanda faced a pivotal moment in November 2021 when she defended President Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for businesses with over 100 employees. Despite legal challenges, Nanda’s confidence in the Department of Labor’s legal authority demonstrated her unwavering commitment to prioritizing worker safety.

Seema Nanda’s impact extends beyond her current role. In the Obama-Biden Administration, she held key leadership positions at the U.S. Department of Labor, including Chief of Staff, Deputy Solicitor, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Senior Advisor to the Secretary.

Her diverse experience also includes leading the Office of Immigrant and Employee Rights Section of the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and working at the National Labor Relations Board.

Senate Confirmation and Recognition

On July 16, 2021, the U.S. Senate confirmed Seema Nanda as the solicitor for the Department of Labor with a vote of 53-46. This significant achievement drew applause from Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus chair Judy Chu, highlighting Nanda’s experience and her crucial role in championing workers’ rights.
