Sam Altman: India is an ‘Incredibly Fast-Growing’ AI Market

GPT-5 Release Marks Major Leap in AI, Sam Altman Predicts India’s Rise

OpenAI has officially taken the wraps off GPT-5, its next-generation AI model that promises to deliver groundbreaking improvements in accuracy, reasoning, coding, and mathematical capabilities. The announcement came during a recent event, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the model’s transformative potential—not just globally, but especially in India, which he described as “incredibly fast-growing” in AI adoption.

“India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market,” Altman said during a media briefing. “What users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable.”

Sam Altman: A Big Step Toward AGI

Altman called GPT-5 a “pretty significant step” toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). According to him, it’s the first mainline model from OpenAI that feels like “you can ask a legitimate, PhD-level expert anything.” In a surprise move, GPT-5 is now available in OpenAI’s free tier for the first time, giving millions of users instant access to what the company calls its “best model yet for coding and agentic tasks.”

The model will be available in three versions—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—allowing developers to strike the right balance between performance, cost, and speed.

Multiple Versions for Different Needs

In the API, GPT-5 will power ChatGPT’s top reasoning capabilities, while a non-reasoning variant, gpt-5-chat-latest, will also be available. OpenAI says GPT-5 Pro, a specialized version with extended reasoning for even more reliable and detailed answers, will soon be accessible to Team, Enterprise, and Edu customers.

  • Free Tier Users: Access to GPT-5 with standard usage limits.

  • ChatGPT Plus ($20/month): Higher GPT-5 usage limits.

  • Pro Users ($200/month): Unlimited GPT-5 access plus an enhanced GPT-5 Pro experience.

Sam Altman: India in the Spotlight

Highlighting India’s rapid AI adoption, Altman revealed that OpenAI is working closely with local partners to make AI more affordable and better suited to the country’s unique needs. He also confirmed plans to visit India in September to strengthen collaborations and understand how GPT-5 can empower more individuals and businesses.

Global Rollout

ChatGPT Team customers can already use GPT-5 starting today, with Enterprise and Edu access set for next week. Developers can integrate GPT-5 through the OpenAI API right away.
