Born into a family deeply rooted in community service, Resham Singh Sandhu’s values were shaped long before he stepped onto British soil. His father, a decorated veteran of the First World War, was awarded the prestigious Indian Order of Merit – equivalent to the Victoria Cross – for his bravery and dedication. Although his father passed away when Resham was very young, his life of service left an indelible mark on him.
When he migrated to Leicestershire from Punjab decades ago, he brought with him not only his cultural heritage but also a deep determination to serve the community, regardless of faith or background.
A Trailblazer in Civic Leadership
In 2010, Resham Singh Sandhu made history by becoming the first turban-wearing Sikh to hold the prestigious office of High Sheriff of Leicestershire. This ancient and honorable role, dating back to 1172, is the oldest secular office in the UK after the Crown. As the Queen’s representative for the judicial system in Leicestershire, Resham’s appointment was widely seen as a milestone for multicultural representation in Britain.
During his tenure, he focused heavily on supporting charitable causes, raising funds for organisations such as Crimebeat and Cancer Research, and celebrating the contributions of community groups and unsung heroes. His presence in the role broke barriers, sending a powerful message: in Great Britain, hard work and merit can elevate anyone to positions of civic dignity, regardless of their background or religion.
Resham Singh Sandhu: Champion of Interfaith Unity
Before his historic appointment as High Sheriff, Resham served as Chairman of Leicester’s Council of Faiths, where he played a pivotal role in fostering understanding among Leicester’s diverse religious communities. In 2006, he was appointed Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Leicestershire, further solidifying his role as a trusted figure representing the Crown in the county. His contributions were officially recognised in 2002 when he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the community.

Resham Singh Sandhu’s service has been acknowledged not just locally, but globally. In 2022, he was honoured with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award – the highest honour given by the Government of India to overseas Indians for outstanding achievement. Presented by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, this award recognised his exceptional contributions in public service, his role in strengthening ties between India and the UK, and his tireless humanitarian work.
Resham recalls with pride how Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally congratulated him on this achievement during the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. “Coming from the Prime Minister, who is busy 24 hours a day, it meant a lot. It really brought me happiness,” he said.
