The journey of Rama Govindarajan began at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where she completed her B.Tech in Chemical Engineering in 1984. Her academic excellence earned her a place at Drexel University, Philadelphia, where she completed her M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1986.
However, it was her doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, completed in 1994, that truly defined her scientific direction. Her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering laid the groundwork for her lifelong fascination with fluid instability and turbulence—subjects that remain at the heart of her research even today. Following her doctorate, she pursued postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), one of the world’s foremost scientific institutions.

Rama Govindarajan’s professional journey is as distinguished as her academic one. She began her career at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru, serving in the Computational and Theoretical Fluid Dynamics Division for a decade (1988–1998). Her research during this period focused on understanding instabilities in fluid flows—crucial for advancing aerospace technology and turbulence modeling.
In 1998, she joined the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) as a faculty member, where she worked until 2012. Her years at JNCASR marked a phase of prolific scientific output and the mentoring of young researchers. Later, she served as a Professor at TIFR Hyderabad (2012–2016), before becoming a Senior Professor and Dean (Academic) at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), Bengaluru, where she continues to inspire the next generation of scientists.
