Born on June 24, 1977, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Peggy Egbert and Sreenivas V. Chari, Raja Jon Vurputoor Chari’s journey began amidst the heartlands of America.

In June 2017, Chari’s destiny took a cosmic turn as he was selected for NASA Astronaut Group 22, marking the beginning of a new chapter in space exploration. His induction into the Artemis Team in December 2020 heralded a monumental milestone—the prospect of walking on the lunar surface, a feat that remains etched in the annals of history.
But it was his selection as the commander of SpaceX Crew-3 that truly underscored his prowess. Making history as the first NASA rookie to command a spaceflight since Joe Engle in 1981, Chari’s ascent to the stars was nothing short of extraordinary.
