Raf Manji: Bridging Finance, Politics, and Social Justice in New Zealand

Raf Manji, a former New Zealand politician, leader, and social visionary, exemplifies the journey of a man who turned his financial acumen into a platform for social change. With a background that spans governance, finance, and social enterprise, his life story is one of resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting communities. From his early years in London to his career in New Zealand politics, Raf Manji’s journey is a testament to how one can leverage expertise and personal values to create a lasting impact.

Early Life of Raf Manji: Roots of Leadership and Vision

Raf Alfred Manji was born in 1966 in London, to an Indian Muslim father and an Irish Catholic mother. His multicultural upbringing instilled in him a deep understanding of diversity, resilience, and the power of unity. These early experiences shaped his worldview and prepared him for the impactful career that lay ahead.

He pursued his education at the University of Manchester, where he earned a degree in economics and social studies. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for his future career in investment banking, where he excelled due to his sharp financial insight and strategic thinking.

However, life had more in store for Manji than a successful career in finance. A chance encounter during his travels in Asia led him to meet a New Zealand woman, whom he later married, and in 2002, he migrated to New Zealand, seeking a new chapter for his life and family.

Upon arriving in New Zealand, Raf Manji continued to build on his academic credentials by earning a Graduate Diploma in Politics and a Master’s in International Law and Politics from the University of Canterbury. His desire to give back to society pushed him towards working with non-profits and engaging in volunteerism. His involvement with the Volunteer Army Foundation further demonstrated his passion for community service and supporting those in need.

Political Career: Championing Christchurch’s Recovery

Raf Manji’s entry into New Zealand politics came in 2013 when he was elected to the Christchurch City Council, representing the Fendalton-Waimairi ward. This decision was fueled by his desire to help Christchurch recover and rebuild from the devastation caused by the 2011 earthquake. Encouraged by Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Manji quickly became a trusted advisor on financial matters, using his extensive background in economics to help manage the city’s finances during its critical rebuilding phase.

During his tenure, he was known for his pragmatic approach to governance, always striving to ensure that the city’s financial health was balanced with the need to rebuild stronger and smarter. His efforts extended beyond city finances; he advocated for innovative solutions like establishing an investment fund for local housing and pushing for Christchurch to bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In 2017, Manji contested the Ilam electorate as an independent candidate, standing against National Party heavyweight Gerry Brownlee. Although he did not win, his campaign brought him significant recognition as he polled second, ahead of the Labour candidate. This accomplishment was a testament to his growing influence and connection with the people of Christchurch.

Leadership in Times of Crisis: Advocating for Christchurch Mosque Victims

Raf Manji’s leadership extended far beyond financial and political matters. Following the horrific Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019, he played a pivotal role in the community’s healing process. Appointed as the chair of an advisory group tasked with deciding how to use the funds raised to support the victims, Manji took a deeply compassionate approach. He established a “listening project,” inspired by the response to the Grenfell Tower fire in London, meeting with victims and hearing their stories firsthand.

His leadership during this tragic time highlighted his dedication to social justice and equity. In 2020, Raf Manji advocated for a $34.8 million government compensation package to support the victims and their families, ensuring that they received the care and justice they deserved.

The Opportunities Party: A Vision for New Zealand

In January 2022, Raf Manji took on a new challenge, becoming the leader of The Opportunities Party (TOP). His vision for New Zealand was grounded in creating a more equitable society, where opportunities were available to all. He campaigned on progressive policies that aimed to tackle the pressing issues of inequality, housing affordability, and climate change.

During the 2023 New Zealand general election, Raf Manji once again contested the Ilam seat. Despite his best efforts, he came second, behind the National Party’s Hamish Campbell, receiving 10,863 votes. TOP received 2.22% of the party vote, falling short of the 5% threshold needed to enter Parliament. Nevertheless, his leadership brought fresh ideas to the political landscape, particularly around social enterprise and innovative economic reforms.

Stepping Down, But Not Out: The End of One Chapter

On 3 December 2023, Raf Manji announced that he was stepping down as the leader of The Opportunities Party. While the party did not achieve electoral success, his time at the helm was characterized by bold ideas and a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable New Zealand.

Raf Manji’s decision to step down may mark the end of his leadership in the party, but it is certainly not the end of his journey. His passion for community service, economic reform, and social justice will continue to shape his future endeavors.
