Hailing from Dharwad, Karnataka, Patil’s story took a heart-wrenching twist when her lifeless body was discovered in the serene waters of the Malaprabha backwaters in Belagavi on August 27. The IT professional, who had returned to India on August 20, was embroiled in a custody battle for her two Australian citizen children.

Sources indicate that Patil had been fighting against the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice, alleging maltreatment and raising concerns about her son’s health. A simple request for a hospital transfer escalated into a full-fledged child protection case, a decision that bewildered many. Despite a positive report from the initial social workers appointed to the case, a change in personnel further complicated matters.
