Prema Yin: The Story of Malaysia’s Rock Sensation

Prema Yin Ranee A/P Kali Kavandan, born on October 3, 1986, in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, Malaysia, is a name that resonates with passion, talent, and resilience in the Malaysian music industry. Known by her stage name Prema Yin, she rose to fame as a contestant and winner of “Who Will Win Malaysia’s Topstar,” capturing the hearts of many with her powerful voice and captivating performances.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings of Prema Yin

Born as the youngest of five children, Prema Yin was surrounded by a supportive family environment. Two of her older brothers, Keevan Raj and Logan Raj, were national field hockey players who represented Malaysia in the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Prema’s musical journey began at a tender age, with her first performances at private functions when she was just three years old. By the age of 14, she was already writing her own songs, showcasing her proficiency on the piano and guitar.

Rise to Fame: Who Will Win Malaysia’s Topstar

In 2004, Prema Yin’s life took a significant turn when she joined the nationwide singing competition “Who Will Win Malaysia’s Topstar.” Her outstanding performances earned her the top prize, including a recording contract with Syncrosound Studios.

Despite her success, Prema felt she needed more experience before fully diving into the music industry. She spent time performing in pubs and joined the world music outfit Aseana Percussion Unit, honing her skills and gaining valuable stage experience.

Venturing into the Indie Scene

Prema Yin’s journey through the indie music scene began with her band “Broken View.” She participated in numerous band competitions and performed at many of Kuala Lumpur’s underground music venues. After the band disbanded, she joined the International Groove Collective (IGC), blending her vocals with the band’s eclectic music style. By August 2007, IGC had split, and Prema was ready to embark on her solo career.

Breakthrough with Eyo Eyo

In 2008, Prema Yin made her mark with her debut single “Bleed,” which topped the Hitz.fm MET10 and reached No. 3 on the Fly FM Campur charts.

Her debut EP “Eyo Eyo” followed in August 2009, featuring five tracks, including the title track in Bahasa Malaysia. The English version of “Eyo Eyo” was later released in the United States in 2011. The music video for “Eyo Eyo,” produced and directed by Phuture Phlow, received positive media attention and established Prema Yin as Malaysia’s new “Rock Princess.”

International Recognition and Tours

Prema Yin’s talent and hard work did not go unnoticed. Her EP “Eyo Eyo” received four nominations at AIM 17 in 2010, a testament to her growing recognition in the Malaysian music industry. Despite not winning any awards, Prema remained humbled and motivated by the acknowledgment.

She toured extensively, performing in Japan, Singapore, Germany, the United States, China, and Thailand. Notable performances included the Penang Jazz Festival and Rock the World 10.

Management Deal

In late 2010, Prema Yin signed a management deal with US artist management company TC Music, LLC. In 2011, she released her next single “Marilah,” accompanied by a music video directed by Gambit Saifullah.

The video garnered significant attention, accumulating over 100,000 views in its first week of release. However, it was deemed controversial and unsuitable for Malaysian culture due to its explicit content. The English version of the song, titled “Addicted,” also gained traction online.

Collaborations and Future Projects

In May 2011, Prema Yin traveled to Los Angeles, where she collaborated with renowned producers and composers such as Scott Krippayne, Dan Hoal, The Highschoolers, and Ra Domini. She worked with American songwriter Hope Raney and German producer Florian Reutter on her 2012 song “Prove It To Me,” showcasing her versatility and expanding her musical style.

Performing at Arthur’s Day 2011

One of the highlights of Prema Yin’s career was her performance at the Arthur’s Day 2011 celebrations in Malaysia. The event, held on September 23 at Speed City KL, featured international artists like Taio Cruz and local stars such as Joe Flizzow and Mizz Nina. Prema’s performance was a standout moment, attended by a crowd of 20,000, celebrating the legacy of Arthur Guinness.
