In 1981, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, one of the world’s most competitive and prestigious technical institutions. His academic excellence propelled him to the United States, where he completed a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1982.

Watson Research Center, he quickly distinguished himself as a leading thinker in theoretical computer science.
By 1994, he was promoted to Manager of Theory of Computing, and in 1995 he moved to IBM Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley, where he served as Senior Manager of Computer Science Principles and Methodologies until 2000.
Under his leadership, IBM’s research groups explored algorithms, complexity theory, cryptography, text mining, and large-scale data systems—work that would later become central to web search and internet infrastructure. In 2005, he joined Yahoo! to establish and lead Yahoo! Research in Sunnyvale, California. Under his direction, Yahoo! Initially contributing across research and infrastructure, his responsibilities expanded rapidly. In 2018, he assumed leadership of Ads and Commerce, and by 2020 his scope grew to include Search, Geo, and Assistant, placing him at the heart of Google’s information ecosystem.
