PM Narendra Modi: In a historic moment underscoring the strengthening diplomatic ties between India and Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the Mediterranean nation’s highest civilian honour. The award was presented by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at a special ceremony held in Nicosia, during Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to the country.
“I am humbled to receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the enduring friendship between our nations and to the 1.4 billion people of India,” the Prime Minister stated with deep humility after accepting the honour.
The Narendra Modi Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III moment wasn’t just a ceremonial accolade—it was a symbolic affirmation of the evolving partnership between two democracies committed to peace, progress, and shared global responsibility. The award is named after Archbishop Makarios III, the founding father and first President of the Republic of Cyprus, revered for his visionary leadership and quest for sovereignty and justice.
PM Narendra Modi: Strengthening Bilateral Bonds
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus marks the first leg of his three-nation tour, which also includes stops in Canada for the G7 Summit, followed by a diplomatic visit to Croatia. His presence in Cyprus signals India’s strategic intent to deepen engagement with European nations, with Cyprus serving as a key partner in the Mediterranean.
Expressing his optimism, Mr. Modi added, “I am confident that in the times to come, our active partnership will touch new heights. Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards building a peaceful and secure world.”
The Ministry of External Affairs of India echoed this sentiment on social media platform X, stating, “President @Christodulides conferred PM @narendramodi with the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. The honour reflects the enduring India–Cyprus bilateral partnership and shared commitment to work together for a common vision of peace, progress and prosperity.”
Cultural Diplomacy Through Gift Exchange
In a beautiful display of India’s heritage and artistry, Prime Minister Modi presented exquisite traditional gifts to Cyprus’ First Family. To First Lady Philippa Karsera, he gifted a handcrafted Silver Clutch Purse from Andhra Pradesh, blending ancient Indian metalwork with contemporary design aesthetics.
Created using the repoussé technique, the purse featured elaborate floral motifs inspired by temple and royal artwork. A semi-precious stone embedded in the center added a regal flair to the modern accessory, symbolizing timeless Indian craftsmanship.
To President Christodoulides, the Indian leader presented a Kashmiri Silk Carpet—a masterpiece of weaving tradition. In a stunning palette of deep red with complementary fawn borders, the carpet was adorned with traditional vine and geometric motifs. Its unique two-tone effect, changing hues with light and angle, enchanted the audience, showcasing the poetic brilliance of Indian artisanship.
