Piyush Gupta was born on 24th January 1960, in Meerut, India, to R.S. Gupta and Minnie Gupta. He embarked on his educational journey at St. Columba’s High School in Delhi. His thirst for knowledge led him to St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in economics.
Not content with just an undergraduate education, Gupta aimed for excellence and enrolled at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, to earn his postgraduate diploma in management. This solid educational foundation laid the groundwork for his illustrious career.
Professional Career
Gupta’s journey into the world of finance commenced in 1982 when he joined Citibank India as a management trainee at the age of 22. His dedication and talent soon shone through, leading to various significant roles within Citibank India, including the role of Chief of Staff to the India head. In 1991, he ventured into the dynamic landscape of Singapore, becoming the Chief of Staff to the Asia head.
In 1998, Gupta’s career took another international turn as he was posted to Indonesia as the country manager. The desire to explore entrepreneurship led him to start a dot-com company in 2000. Despite facing challenges, his resilience and commitment were evident when he closed his venture and rejoined Citigroup in 2001.
The years that followed saw Piyush Gupta making significant contributions to Citigroup, including his role as the country officer in Malaysia from 2002 to 2007. Here, he played a pivotal role in expanding Citigroup’s branch network. His relentless pursuit of excellence propelled him to become the country officer in Singapore and the head of the Corporate and Investment Bank in ASEAN.
