Piyush Goyal Confirms $500 Billion Australia Housing Project
India Eyes $500 Billion Australia Housing Project, Says Piyush Goyal
In a significant announcement that could reshape global housing collaborations, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday revealed that India is in “deep negotiations” with Australia to undertake a historic housing project worth $500 billion. The plan envisions the creation of 1 million homes in Australia, aimed at addressing the island nation’s persistent housing supply shortage.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Mumbai, Goyal emphasized the scale of the opportunity. “I am in deep negotiation with my counterpart in Australia to create 1 million homes. Anybody wants to do the maths? A million homes in Australia would be at least USD 500 billion opportunity,” he said.
Piyush Goyal: Bridging the Housing Gap in Australia
Australia has long been grappling with skyrocketing real estate prices and a mismatch between demand and supply in the housing market. Affordable housing was also a defining issue in the country’s recent national elections. The Piyush Goyal Australia housing project is being viewed as a potential solution to this structural challenge, though specifics regarding location, timelines, and Canberra’s role in financing remain undisclosed.
Goyal hinted that Indian workers could be trained in Australia to meet the skill standards required for constructing homes locally. This not only provides employment opportunities but also strengthens skill transfer and international collaboration between the two nations.
UAE Financing on the Table
The minister further revealed that India has reached out to the United Arab Emirates for potential funding support. During discussions with UAE Trade Minister Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Goyal pitched the idea of a partnership to finance the massive housing venture. “I talked to Thani to see if we can do a partnership to help us fund this massive opportunity,” he explained.
Piyush Goyal: Part of a Bigger Trade Push
The housing talks are unfolding against the backdrop of broader India-Australia trade negotiations, including a proposed free trade agreement. Canberra has already extended support to New Delhi after the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on several exports.
Despite these trade headwinds, Goyal expressed confidence that India’s exports will surpass $825 billion in FY25, as the country seeks to diversify its markets and expand its global trade footprint. He also highlighted ongoing talks with multiple nations, including:
-
Oman – aiming for a deal in the next two weeks.
-
New Zealand – pact expected within two months.
-
European Union – negotiations fast-tracked, with the possibility of signing by year-end.
-
Qatar, Chile, Peru, and South Africa – discussions gaining momentum for trade partnerships.
“Opportunities Must Be Seized”
Goyal underscored the importance of India proactively seizing global opportunities. “It’s for us to grasp these openings. If we miss out, we will have only ourselves to blame,” he told industry leaders in Mumbai.
