After Pahalgam Terror Attack, PM Modi Declares Bold Response: “We Will Avenge Every Innocent Life”

In a thunderous address during his visit to Bihar on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a fierce message in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, asserting that the masterminds behind the deadly assault “will face consequences beyond their imagination.” This marks his first public response since the brutal attack in Baisaran, near Pahalgam in South Kashmir, that took the lives of 26 innocent civilians, most of them tourists, on Tuesday.

Standing firm before a crowd in Patna, PM Modi declared, “India’s spirit will never be broken by terrorism. Terrorism will not go unpunished.” His voice carried the pain of a grieving nation and the resolve of a government no longer willing to tolerate cross-border terror.

Pahalgam Terror: Nationwide Shock and Decisive Action

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Modi, convened on Wednesday for a high-stakes meeting in New Delhi. The CCS emerged with a five-pronged retaliation strategy that sent a powerful message to Islamabad.

Among the most consequential decisions was the suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, a watershed moment in India’s diplomatic history. This action, symbolic yet significant, is to remain in effect until Pakistan can verifiably halt its support for terror infrastructure operating across the border.

Additionally, the CCS ordered:

• Immediate reduction in diplomatic ties with Pakistan. Both nations will downsize their respective high commissions by nearly 45%, cutting staff from 55 to 30 by May 1.

• Expulsion of Pakistani military and intelligence advisors posted in New Delhi.

• Closure of the Attari land border crossing to halt movement until further notice.

• Revocation of the SAARC visa exemption scheme for Pakistani nationals, who must now exit India within 48 hours.

• Recall of India’s Defence, Naval, and Air advisors from Islamabad, effectively dissolving these strategic positions in both capitals.

International Visits Cut Short Amid National Tragedy

The gravity of the Pahalgam terror attack was underscored when national leaders, including PM Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, truncated their international visits to return home. Modi left Saudi Arabia, while Sitharaman and Gandhi returned from the US and UK respectively, reaffirming national unity in the face of terror.

A Grieving Nation Demands Justice

Across the country, families mourned those lost in the carnage at Baisaran. Vigils, protests, and public outcry have erupted, demanding swift justice and lasting change. The attack is now being described as the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF jawans.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has already launched a region-wide security review. Following directives from Home Minister Amit Shah, Sinha assured citizens of rapid action and stated that those behind the attack will not escape accountability.

Pakistan’s Role Under International Scrutiny

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the press shortly after the CCS meeting, linking the Pahalgam terror attack to Pakistan-based militant networks. He confirmed that actionable intelligence led to India’s immediate diplomatic downgrades and border decisions. “This is not diplomacy as usual. This is about protecting every Indian life,” he said.

Global leaders have begun to weigh in, urging restraint while acknowledging India’s right to self-defense. Yet, the message from New Delhi is crystal clear: support for terrorism will now carry diplomatic and economic consequences.
