Neil Sherring: Early Foundations and Legal Career
Sherring’s journey began with a strong academic foundation. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Curry College, he pursued his Juris Doctorate at Suffolk University Law School, where he developed the skills and discipline that would shape his career in law.
He launched his legal career as a Massachusetts Superior Court Law Clerk, which gave him invaluable insight into judicial processes. His early experiences as an Assistant District Attorney for the Northwestern District of Massachusetts and later as an Assistant Attorney General exposed him to the intricacies of both criminal and civil law. Sherring also practiced as a trial attorney at Mintz Levin, one of Boston’s prominent firms, before establishing himself as a partner at Dakoyannis & Sherring, LLC in 2001. There, he concentrated on landlord-tenant disputes, real estate law, personal injury claims, insurance cases, and employment discrimination matters. His reputation as a skilled litigator and compassionate advocate quickly grew, establishing him as a trusted name in Massachusetts law.
Judicial Appointment – A Historic Milestone
In 2018, Governor Charlie Baker appointed Neil Sherring as the Presiding First Justice of the Metro-South Division of the Massachusetts Housing Court. On June 13 of that year, he was sworn in, making history as the first Indian-American judge appointed to the Massachusetts Housing Court.
This milestone was more than a personal achievement—it was a moment of representation and inspiration for countless aspiring South Asian attorneys and students across the United States. Sherring’s appointment was a testament to his decades of dedication, professionalism, and integrity.
As a judge, Sherring’s role goes beyond presiding over cases; he also serves as the Co-Chair of the Housing Court’s Educational Committee, ensuring that the judicial system remains informed, efficient, and accessible. Neil Sherring: Educator, Mentor, and Thought Leader
Sherring’s contributions extend into the academic world. He is an adjunct professor at Boston College Law School, where he teaches landlord-tenant law. He has also served as a faculty member and Program Chair for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) workshops, such as “Trying your First Civil Case in the Superior Court” and the “Deposition Workshop.” These programs highlight his commitment to mentoring young lawyers and strengthening the legal profession through education.

Locally, he serves on the Board of the Westwood Community Chest, where he has also held positions as President and Vice President.
