Early Life and Education
Mehdi Raza Hasan was born in Swindon, England, to immigrant Indian Hyderabadi Shia Muslim parents from the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, South India (now in Telangana).
Growing up in a multicultural environment, Hasan’s upbringing was steeped in the rich traditions of his heritage while also embracing the diverse influences of British society. This unique blend of cultural experiences would later shape his perspective and fuel his passion for social justice.
Hasan’s educational journey began at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood, an independent day school for boys. His academic excellence and keen interest in politics led him to Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). Graduating in 2000, Hasan’s time at Oxford laid the foundation for his illustrious career in journalism and political commentary.
Career Beginnings
Hasan’s foray into the world of journalism started as a researcher and then producer on ITV’s Jonathan Dimbleby programme. This early experience honed his skills in investigative journalism and set the stage for his future endeavors.
Following a stint on BBC’s The Politics Show, Mehdi Hasan became the deputy executive producer on Sky’s breakfast show Sunrise, showcasing his versatility and expertise in various media formats.
In 2009, Mehdi Hasan was appointed senior editor for politics at the New Statesman, a role that allowed him to delve deeper into political analysis and commentary. His tenure at the New Statesman was marked by incisive critiques and thought-provoking articles that resonated with readers. Hasan’s ability to dissect complex political issues and present them in an accessible manner garnered him a loyal following.

While NBC stated that the shifts were coincidental and not influenced by the hosts’ religion, the decision sparked widespread debate and criticism.
Undeterred, Mehdi Hasan announced his departure from MSNBC in January 2024 and joined The Guardian as a regular columnist in February. This transition marked a new chapter in his career, allowing him to continue his mission of providing incisive commentary and analysis on pressing global issues.
