MEA Reaffirms India-US Partnership as Tariff Tensions Rise

MEA Confident in India-US Strategic Partnership Ahead of Trump-Putin Meeting

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday reiterated its confidence in the enduring India-US strategic partnership despite the ongoing tariff dispute, underscoring that the two democracies have “weathered several transitions and challenges” over the years.

The statement comes just a day before the high-stakes meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin — a diplomatic event whose outcome could directly impact India, especially as it faces an additional 25% tariff due to its continued purchase of Russian oil.

Speaking to the media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the depth and resilience of bilateral ties:

“The United States and India share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and we remain focused on the substantive agenda both countries have committed to. We hope the relationship will continue to move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests.”

MEA: ‘Yudh Abhyas’ Military Exercise in Alaska

As a testament to the growing defence cooperation, Jaiswal confirmed that the 21st edition of the annual joint military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ is scheduled to take place later this month in Alaska. The drill is expected to further enhance operational interoperability between the armed forces of both nations, particularly in high-altitude and extreme cold conditions.

Defence Engagements Remain on Track

The MEA also announced that a US defence policy team will visit New Delhi in mid-August, strengthening the military and strategic dimension of the India-US strategic partnership.

“The India-US defence partnership, underpinned by foundational defence agreements, is an important pillar of the bilateral relationship. This robust cooperation has strengthened across all domains,” Jaiswal said.

He also confirmed that preparations are underway for the 2+2 Intersessional meeting at the working level, slated for the end of this month.

MEA: Clarification on Defence Purchases

In response to a recent media report suggesting that New Delhi had paused talks on major defence procurements from Washington, the Defence Ministry categorically denied any such move.

“The news reports on India pausing talks related to defence purchases with the US are false and fabricated. All procurement cases are progressing as per the laid-down procedures,” ministry officials clarified.
