In December 2025, Jersey City witnessed a moment that will be remembered for generations. Mamta Singh, a nonprofit leader and an unwavering community organizer, stepped into the history books by becoming the first Indian American ever elected to public office in Jersey City.
Mamta Singh: A Trailblazing Leader for a Changing City
For years, Jersey City’s “Little India” has been a vibrant engine—economically, culturally, and socially—yet its political representation had remained stagnant. The election of Mamta Singh to the Jersey City Council changed that narrative overnight. Her win delivered long-awaited visibility to thousands of families whose stories had never been fully acknowledged in City Hall.
This was not a victory born from slogans or promises. It was born from the trust she earned over more than a decade—trust built not in political halls, but in parks, community centers, school meetings, and living rooms across the city.
From Immigrant Mother to Citywide Changemaker
When Mamta arrived from India in 2010, she came not as a politician, but as a mother searching for support in a new and unfamiliar environment. She often spoke about the loneliness and confusion she felt navigating a new country, new systems, and new expectations. As a former planner of grand, high-end weddings in India, she was no stranger to organization—but rebuilding life from scratch was new terrain.
Instead of giving in to the uncertainty, she turned her struggle into strength.
As a stay-at-home mom caring for her young son, Mamta realized that countless other families felt the same void—no community network, few resources, and limited spaces where children and parents could connect. Her response became one of the most powerful grassroots movements in Jersey City.
Mamta Singh: JCFamilies – Where a Mother’s Need Became a Movement
In 2011, Mamta founded JCFamilies, planting the seeds of an organization that would soon revolutionize family life in the city.
Starting with small gatherings in parks, she created a warm, welcoming place for parents and children to meet, play, learn, and grow.
Soon, JCFamilies became:
-
The largest family community in Jersey City
-
A support system for thousands of women, children, and working parents
-
A team of passionate mothers organizing some of the city’s most kid-friendly events
The impact was not just social—it was transformational. Families found community. Children found enriching activities. Parents found relief, guidance, and belonging.
Indians in Jersey City: Preserving Culture, Creating Bridges
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by immigrant families, Mamta also founded Indians in Jersey City, a cultural and community support group that has become a lifeline for thousands.
The organization:
-
Helps newcomers navigate schools, services, and city systems
-
Organizes cultural forums, festivals, and events
-
Builds bridges between generations, communities, and neighborhoods
-
Creates safe spaces where families can celebrate identity without losing their roots
Through this work, Mamta became more than a leader—she became a guide, an advocate, and a trusted voice for immigrant families who often struggled quietly.
A Platform Shaped by Real Lives and Real Needs
Her campaign for the Jersey City Council At-Large seat resonated deeply because it was not theoretical. It came from years of listening, serving, and standing beside families across the city.
Her priorities reflect the issues she has lived through with her community:
1. Stabilizing Property Taxes
Ensuring families are not priced out of their neighborhoods.
2. Expanding Recreation for Youth
Creating safe, enriching environments that support children’s development.
3. Strengthening Support for Working Families
Championing childcare access, family services, and parent-friendly policies.
4. Affordable Housing & Tenant Protection
Advocating for fair, transparent, inclusive development.
5. Transparent and Community-Centered Governance
Opening doors, dismantling barriers, and making government accessible to all.
6. Balanced Public Safety Solutions
Focusing on efficiency, accountability, and community-driven models.
These were not just campaign points—they were lived experiences.
The Human Side of a Leader
Behind the powerful public figure is a joyful, devoted mother.
Mamta often jokes that when she is skateboarding or scooting with her son, she forgets who the kid is and who the adult is.
Her son is her energy source, her motivation, and her reminder of why she fights for families.
To keep up with him, she maintains a disciplined fitness routine—working out at a CrossFit gym most days and focusing on a healthy lifestyle. “My son keeps me on my toes,” she always says with a smile.
Her journey also earned her the Jersey City Women of Action Award in 2016, long before politics entered the picture.
