Through his visionary weekly webinar series on post-slavery indentureship—now surpassing 219 episodes—Kumar Mahabir has brought together scholars, activists, artists, and everyday people to engage in meaningful dialogue about the Indo-Caribbean experience. The Trinidad and Tobago government recognized Kumar Mahabir’s immense contribution to education by awarding him the Hummingbird Medal (Silver) in 2011. That same year, he received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of the West Indies (UWI)—a rare honor bestowed upon only 50 alumni out of over 20,000 graduates.
Mahabir has authored 12 books to date, including the acclaimed Medicinal and Edible Plants used by East Indians of Trinidad and Tobago, and cultural cornerstones like Indian Caribbean Folklore Spirits and The Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean. These works, deeply rooted in field research and oral history, have become foundational texts in Indo-Caribbean studies.

In 2018, after over a decade of service at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), Kumar Mahabir was unjustly retrenched during mass layoffs. But what could have been a setback became a defining moment in his life. With grace and dignity, he continued his work independently, launching his webinar platform and taking his knowledge directly to the people.
Kumar Mahabir was awarded a scholarship by the Netherlands’ SEPHIS Programme, a travel grant from India’s Ministry of Tourism, and was the only Caribbean academic to win an international scholarship to Egypt for a workshop on Visual Methodologies. Even in moments of professional adversity, the world continued to recognize his worth.
Championing Education and Empowerment
Beyond academia, Kumar Mahabir is the CEO of CHAKRA Publishing, a leading cultural press that has given a platform to Indo-Caribbean narratives. For two decades, he has edited and published magazines under the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre, chronicling stories that might otherwise be lost to time.
