But his dreams were not limited to his homeland. In 1974, Kular emigrated to Canada, seeking new opportunities in the healthcare system. He completed his residency training in pediatrics at Dalhousie University’s IWK Health Centre in Nova Scotia and later served at the Canadian Armed Forces Hospital in Halifax.
In 1978, Kuldip Singh Kular established a family practice in Campbellton, New Brunswick, marking the beginning of a long and successful medical career. His deep connection to his patients made him a trusted figure in the community, and it wasn’t long before Kular became involved in a larger cause.
Relocating to Brampton, Ontario, in 1986, Kuldip Singh Kular founded a family and sports medicine clinic in a rapidly growing city that had become home to many Indian immigrants. His role extended beyond medicine; he became a mentor, advocate, and leader for the South Asian community. Kular was instrumental in founding the Northern Indian Medical and Dental Association of Canada, promoting the development of Indian-origin medical professionals across the country.
Transition to Politics
Kular’s dedication to community service naturally led him to politics, a platform from which he could make even greater strides in promoting equity and diversity. His entry into the political scene came in 2003 when he ran as a Liberal candidate for the riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton-Springdale in the Ontario Provincial election.
Despite facing personal challenges, including discipline by the Physician’s Board, Kuldip Singh Kular demonstrated incredible resilience. His message of improving healthcare access, creating opportunities for immigrants, and fostering strong communities resonated with voters. He won the election by a comfortable margin, defeating the Progressive Conservative incumbent, Raminder Singh Gill, and signaling the beginning of an impactful political career.
Political Achievements and Challenges
As a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2011, Kuldip Singh Kular served with distinction. During his tenure, he held various important roles, including parliamentary assistant to ministers responsible for Citizenship and Immigration, Democratic Renewal, and Health and Long-Term Care. His advocacy for better healthcare services, especially in immigrant communities, earned him wide recognition.
In June 2005, Kuldip Singh Kular represented Ontario as part of a multi-party delegation at the 43rd Canadian Regional Conference for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. His presence on the delegation demonstrated his growing influence and leadership on the national stage.
In 2009, Kuldip Singh Kular joined Premier Dalton McGuinty’s trade mission to India, representing Canadian business interests and promoting stronger ties with his country of birth. This mission highlighted Kular’s ability to bridge cultures and forge economic partnerships, benefiting both Canada and India.
However, Kular’s political journey was not without challenges. In October 2009, he faced accusations related to an incident where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle he was driving.
The incident led to his resignation as parliamentary assistant, casting a shadow over his career. Yet, true to his character, Kular did not back down. He maintained his innocence, and after a rigorous legal process, he was acquitted in 2010 due to contradictory evidence. His perseverance paid off as he was reinstated to his former position shortly thereafter.
The 2011 and 2014 Elections
Despite his contributions, Kular’s political career faced difficulties in later years. In the 2011 provincial election, he was defeated by New Democratic Party candidate Jagmeet Singh, a rising star in Canadian politics, by a margin of 2,120 votes. The loss was a significant setback for Kular, but it did not deter him from continuing his work in the community.
Undeterred, Kuldip Singh Kular ran again in the 2014 election but was once again defeated by Singh. This marked the end of Kular’s time in office, yet his legacy as a dedicated public servant remains intact.
