Jyoti Chand: Author, Influencer & Advocate for Mental Health

Jyoti Chand: Redefining Motherhood and Mental Health Through Storytelling

When you think of authenticity, humor, and heart all rolled into one, you think of Jyoti Chand Mamajotes. Known online as “your cool mom friend,” Jyoti is more than just a content creator—she is a storyteller, an advocate, and a voice for the countless people who have longed to see their struggles, their laughter, and their messy reality reflected in a world that often demands perfection.

From stand-up comedy stages to Instagram reels, from heartfelt newsletters to a groundbreaking debut book, Jyoti has built a community that feels like family. She is the mom next door—the one who tells it like it is, laughs at life’s chaos, and reminds you that you’re never alone.

Jyoti Chand: From Suburbs to Spotlight

Born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, Jyoti grew up as a first-generation South Asian navigating the space between two cultures. Now living in the suburbs of Chicago with her husband and three children, she hasn’t forgotten the challenges of her younger years.

Her journey is as relatable as it is inspiring. With an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University, Jyoti combined her academic expertise with her life experiences to create something she wished she had growing up—stories that reflect the lives of South Asian kids struggling with identity, expectations, and mental health.

Fitting Indian – A Story for Every Kid Who Felt Invisible

In Spring 2025, Jyoti Chand Mamajotes released her debut teen graphic novel, Fitting Indian, in collaboration with illustrator Tara Anand and HarperCollins. The book follows Nitasha, a teenager wrestling with cultural pressures, mental health struggles, and the desperate desire to belong.

Jyoti’s motivation for writing was deeply personal:

“When I sat down to write Fitting Indian, I had one audience in mind: my younger self. Growing up, I didn’t see characters who looked like me or wrestled with the same issues I did behind closed doors.”

Through Nitasha’s story, Jyoti created the mirror she once needed—a reminder to young readers that they are seen, valid, and not alone in their struggles. The book also shines a powerful light on topics that are often stigmatized in immigrant families, such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm.

But Fitting Indian is more than a story—it’s a conversation starter. Educators and librarians can use it to spark dialogue around cultural expectations, identity, and mental health. Most importantly, it’s a lifeline for teens who may feel like their pain doesn’t matter.

Jyoti Chand: The Mom Friend We All Needed

Beyond her literary work, Jyoti Chand Mamajotes has become a trusted and beloved voice on social media. With her background in stand-up comedy and improv, she crafts reels, posts, and stories that guarantee laughter while delivering heartfelt honesty.

Unlike polished influencers who portray perfection, Jyoti leans into the chaos of motherhood—the spilled milk, the tantrums, the sleepless nights—and shows her community that imperfection is not only okay, it’s beautiful.

Her content isn’t just funny—it’s healing. Through her DMs, events, and newsletters, Jyoti maintains direct, genuine communication with her followers, fostering a supportive environment where moms can finally exhale and say, “Me too.”

Advocacy, Honesty, and Courage

What sets Jyoti apart is her willingness to speak openly about her personal battles with anxiety, depression, and sobriety. By pulling back the curtain, she empowers other mothers to prioritize their self-care and mental health without shame or guilt.

Her advocacy for maternal mental health is reshaping conversations in households and communities, particularly in spaces where mental health has long been stigmatized. By blending humor with raw honesty, Jyoti proves that vulnerability is not weakness—it’s strength.

Currently managed by Haley Henning at YMU Social in Los Angeles, Jyoti is far from slowing down. With a second book already in the works and multiple projects on the horizon, she continues to expand her reach and influence.
