Jay Chaudhuri: Early Life and Education

Jay Chaudhuri’s roots trace back to his parent’s decision to settle in Fayetteville, where his father’s journey from India unfolded over fifty years ago. His academic prowess led him through Terry Sanford High School, Davidson College, Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, and finally, the North Carolina Central University School of Law, where he graduated with honours.

Career Trajectory

Jay’s trajectory in public service began as a vital aide to State Senator and Attorney General Roy Cooper. His commitment to justice and the protection of children from internet predators resulted in a Marvin Award from the National Association of Attorneys General.

Transitioning to the role of General Counsel and senior policy advisor to State Treasurer Janet Cowell, Jay played a pivotal role in recovering almost $100 million for pension and escheat funds. His leadership also birthed the Innovation Fund, a testament to his dedication to fostering economic growth in North Carolina.

Leadership in the Senate

Elected as State Senator for District 15 (Raleigh, Cary, and Garner), Jay Chaudhuri continued his unwavering advocacy. From championing class-size funding to leading the charge against gun violence in schools, his impact resonates in policies that directly influence the lives of North Carolinians.

In 2019, Senate Democrats recognized his leadership by electing him as Minority Whip, the second-highest position in the State Senate.
