Jaishankar Rubio Meeting: Dialogue on Trade Deal Progress

Jaishankar Rubio Meeting in New York: India-US Talks on Trade, Tariffs, and Global Concerns

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held his first face-to-face meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly. The Jaishankar Rubio meeting, hosted at the Lotte New York Palace, came at a critical juncture following President Donald Trump’s recent move to impose an additional 25% tariff on India over its purchase of Russian oil. With levies now totaling 50%, the talks carried both urgency and diplomatic weight.

Jaishankar shared on social media:
“Good to meet @SecRubio this morning in New York. Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch.”

Jaishankar Rubio Meeting: Trade Negotiations Gain Momentum

Coinciding with the high-level meeting, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal led an Indian delegation for trade talks in New York. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed that efforts are underway for an “early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement,” following “positive discussions” during the September 16 visit of officials from the US Trade Representative’s office.

President Trump, while defending his tariff decision, recently assured that the two countries would face “no difficulty” in finalizing a trade deal. The Jaishankar Rubio meeting appears to be laying the groundwork for this optimism to take shape.

Concerns Beyond Trade

The backdrop to the meeting also included unease in the Indian-American community after Trump signed an executive order imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications. The White House has since clarified that the rule will not affect existing visa holders, but concerns remain within the tech sector.

Rubio, meanwhile, has described India as “one of the top relationships that the US has in the world today.” During the Senate hearing for Sergio Gor, Trump’s nominee as the next US Ambassador to India, Rubio emphasized India’s role in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific and reiterated its “core” position in the region’s security architecture.

Strategic Partnership in Focus

This is the first direct engagement between Jaishankar and Rubio since trade frictions escalated under Trump’s tariff announcement. The two leaders had previously met in Washington in July at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, but this latest dialogue reflects the pressing need to navigate both immediate disputes and longer-term strategic priorities.

Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on Sunday for the UNGA week, will continue a packed schedule of bilateral and multilateral engagements. His address at the General Debate on September 27 is expected to underline India’s global priorities, from economic resilience to regional stability.
