Before entering the political arena, Indranee Rajah established herself as a respected lawyer. She commenced her legal career in 1987 with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and later joined Drew & Napier in 1988.
Her legal journey was marked by diligence and excellence, leading her to become a director of the firm in 1991. Her expertise lay in cross-border dispute resolution, and she served as an advocate and solicitor. Her dedication to the legal profession culminated in her appointment as Senior Counsel by Chief Justice Yong Pung How in January 2003.
A Political Debut
In 2001, Indranee Rajah transitioned from law to politics, making her political debut as part of a six-member People’s Action Party (PAP) team in Tanjong Pagar GRC during the general election. Her victory marked the beginning of an illustrious political career.
Initially representing the Tanglin–Cairnhill ward of Tanjong Pagar GRC, she later assumed additional responsibilities after the passing of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in 2015. Indranee Rajah served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tanjong Pagar–Tiong Bahru ward and has continued to do so since then.
Educational Journey of Indranee Rajah
Indranee’s academic journey laid the foundation for her success. She attended Marymount Convent Primary School and Marymount Convent Secondary School before graduating from Raffles Institution.
Her educational odyssey culminated at the National University of Singapore, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree with honours in 1986. This solid educational background undoubtedly contributed to her intellectual prowess and ability to excel in diverse fields.

Indranee’s political career has been marked by a series of significant appointments and accomplishments. She served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 2006 to 2011, displaying her aptitude for effective governance. Her roles expanded over the years, including being designated as Senior Minister of State for Law and Senior Minister of State for Education in 2012.
Indranee Rajah & Her Remarkable Achievements
One of her remarkable achievements was leading a 12-member committee in 2013 to shape the future of legal education in Singapore, culminating in the establishment of the SUSS School of Law. Her contributions extended to the finance sector when she assumed the role of Senior Minister of State for Finance in 2015, where she played a crucial role in developing the government’s fiscal policies.
A Leader of the House
In August 2020, Indranee Rajah was appointed as the Leader of the House for the 14th Parliament, a testament to her leadership skills and ability to foster cooperation among her peers.
Her multifaceted role spans various domains, including oversight of the National Population and Talent Division, engagement in the development of fiscal policies, and the promotion of professional services such as legal and accounting industries through the Professional Services Programme Office (PSPO).
As Second Minister for National Development, she contributes to the formulation of Singapore’s housing and development policies, emphasizing sustainability and urban planning for a “City in Nature.”
