A devastating East London Indian restaurant arson attack has left a community in shock after a blaze tore through a popular eatery in Gants Hill, leaving five diners injured, two of them critically.
The fire, which erupted late on Friday night at a restaurant on Woodford Avenue, is now being investigated as a deliberate act. Police have confirmed the arrest of a 15-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
Indian Restaurant: CCTV Footage Captures Attack
According to investigators, CCTV footage shows three masked suspects entering the restaurant before spraying liquid across the floor and igniting it. Within seconds, flames engulfed the dining area, triggering chaos as terrified customers tried to escape.
The shocking footage has circulated widely across social media, although authorities have not verified its authenticity. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers of the Metropolitan Police described the incident as “deeply concerning” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
“I know the community members are concerned and shocked by this incident. I would urge anyone with any information or concerns to come forward and speak to the police,” Rogers said.
Victims in Critical Condition
Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes. The London Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics treated five people for severe burns and smoke inhalation. Two victims—a man and a woman—were taken to a major trauma centre and remain in life-threatening condition, while three others are recovering at local hospitals.
Authorities believe there may be two additional victims who fled the scene before officers arrived. Efforts are ongoing to identify and locate them.
Indian Restaurant: Community in Shock
Neighbours described hearing “horrific screams” as the fire spread rapidly through the restaurant. The establishment, managed by Rohit Kaluvala, is well-known locally for serving authentic Indian cuisine and has been a regular gathering spot for families and community events.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed they were called at 9:02 pm and quickly brought the blaze under control, but the restaurant sustained extensive fire and smoke damage.
Ongoing Investigation
Police maintained a significant presence in the Gants Hill area over the weekend to reassure residents and gather evidence. The motive behind the suspected East London Indian restaurant arson remains unclear, and investigators are working to establish whether the attack was targeted.
The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police are continuing their joint inquiry, appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to assist.
“This was a reckless act that put lives at serious risk,” said a fire brigade spokesperson. “Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
