Indian Embassy in Oman Shelters Trafficked Woman

In a distressing incident, a Hyderabad woman, Fareeda Begum (49), finds herself stranded in Oman, allegedly trafficked from Dubai under the false pretence of a job offer. The Indian embassy in Oman has extended shelter to Fareeda following an appeal by activist Charmesh Sharma, known for aiding Indians facing challenges abroad.

Sharma’s urgent plea to the President, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Indian Embassy in Oman spurred this intervention after PTI Videos reported the situation on January 7.

Fareeda initially travelled to Dubai for employment through an agent, falling ill after 21 days. Instead of repatriating her to India, the agent, Shahanaz, purportedly sent her to Muscat. There, Fareeda allegedly had her mobile phone, passport, and documents confiscated, being compelled into labour, as revealed by Sharma.

Upon Sharma’s complaint, the Indian embassy in Oman promptly addressed the matter. Welfare officer Pradeep Kumar confirmed that Fareeda sought refuge at the embassy on January 8.

She was provided accommodation, including boarding and lodging facilities, as efforts for her early repatriation are actively pursued with local authorities, as stated in the embassy’s response.

Fareeda’s sister, Famida, expressed concern over her deteriorating health and inability to communicate. The plea for the Indian Embassy to rescue and bring Fareeda back home underscores the critical challenges faced by individuals subjected to trafficking schemes, emphasizing the need for heightened protective measures and diplomatic actions in such distressing situations.
