From escaping political turmoil in Uganda to building a life of purpose in the UK, Hemandra Hindocha’s story is more than remarkable – it’s profoundly inspirational.
Hemandra Hindocha: A Journey Born from Adversity
Born in Uganda, Hemandra’s life took a dramatic turn in 1972 when Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians forced his family to flee. Having been in university in India at the time, he completed his accountancy degree before joining his displaced family in the UK in 1973.
His early days in Britain were far from easy. Like many immigrants, he had to navigate unfamiliar terrain, juggling jobs as a garage assistant, council employee, and even as a driving instructor. But those experiences shaped his values: perseverance, humility, and service.
A Calling to Serve – The Post Office Journey Begins
In June 1981, Hemandra Hindocha stepped into the world of postal services, becoming postmaster of Regent Square Post Office in Northampton. What began as a role soon became a lifelong mission. Seven years later, he took over the Westcotes Post Office in Leicester — a branch that he would turn into a cornerstone of the community.
For 43 years, Hemandra has been more than just a provider of postal services — he’s been a trusted confidante, a problem-solver, and an unwavering source of support for everyone who walks through his doors.
Hemandra Hindocha: The Heart of Westcotes – A Community Icon
To the people of Westcotes, Hemandra Hindocha is not just a postmaster. He’s family. Generations have grown up knowing his kindness and dedication. “I especially enjoy the rapport with my customers and understand the importance of building good relationships with them – they are like extended family,” he shares.
His commitment was on full display during the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of the world shut down, H and his wife Kirti kept the Post Office open, ensuring people had access to vital services when they needed them most. That tireless dedication helped countless families through one of the hardest times in recent history.
The Champion of Postmasters in the Midlands
But Hemandra Hindocha’s influence extends far beyond his own post office. Early in his career, he recognised the challenges new and inexperienced postmasters faced. Rather than sit idly by, he took action, founding a support group for Midlands postmasters. The group became a haven for shared experiences, guidance, and camaraderie among postmasters, many of whom credit H for their professional growth.
Alongside fellow postmaster Vijay Kanabar, he built a network that strengthened the entire region. His work even led him to become Executive Officer for the Midlands region of the National Federation of Subpostmasters, representing and advocating for his peers on a national level.
Amanda Jones, a senior Post Office executive, describes him best: “H is one of our incredible Postmasters. He goes the extra mile for his community and fellow Postmasters. He is knowledgeable, approachable, caring and positive.”
A Royal Recognition: The British Empire Medal
In recognition of his lifelong service, Hemandra Hindocha was awarded the British Empire Medal — a well-deserved honour that pays tribute to the decades he’s dedicated to the people of Leicester and beyond.
“I was surprised and delighted to find out I had been named in the New Year Honours list,” H shared, visibly moved by the recognition. “I still love coming to work every day, even on my days off.”
His humility, despite the royal honour, speaks volumes about the kind of man he is — committed, compassionate, and grounded.
A Celebration of Service and Legacy
In 2021, H marked 40 years of service — a milestone he chose to celebrate in a way that reflected his values. As soon as pandemic restrictions eased, he hosted a special Indian meal for 45 local postmasters and Post Office colleagues. It wasn’t about personal praise; it was about celebrating togetherness and community.
Even after running multiple branches over the years — including stepping in to help struggling locations maintain essential services — H has no plans to retire. At 73 years old, his passion remains undiminished. “I’m looking forward to serving my customers for many more years,” he says with a smile.
