After completing his education in India, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in economics and political science, Takhar made the bold decision to immigrate to Canada in 1974. By 1977, he had settled in Mississauga, Ontario, a place he would come to serve for over a decade in political office.
Takhar’s passion for learning never waned. He further enhanced his expertise by adding an Executive MBA (EMBA) from the prestigious Kellogg-Schlich program. His qualifications, including FCPA and FCMA designations, reflected his dedication to understanding the complexities of financial management and governance. As a certified CMA, he shared his knowledge, teaching accredited courses at Sheridan College for 13 years.

He held senior financial positions in major companies like AGRA Industries Limited, Linear Technology Inc./Gennum Corporation, and Timex Canada Inc. Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar also served as the Associate Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Peel District School Board from 1994 to 2003. He further showcased his leadership as the President and CEO of the Chalmers Group of Companies before his transition to political life.

In 2003, Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar entered politics as the Liberal candidate for Mississauga Centre. His passion for public service and deep connection to the community helped him defeat the Progressive Conservative incumbent Rob Sampson by 2,620 votes, marking the beginning of a long and impactful political career.
In 2007, Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar ran again, this time for the redistributed riding of Mississauga—Erindale. His dedication to serving the people of his community was recognized once again, as he won with a significant margin of 6,638 votes against his competitor, David Brown. This victory solidified his position as a key figure in Ontario’s political landscape, and he continued to serve his constituents with integrity and vision.
A Trailblazing Politician: First Indian-Canadian in Ontario’s Cabinet
One of the most notable moments in Takhar’s political career came in October 2003, when Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed him as the Minister of Transportation. This appointment was historic—Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar became the first Indian-Canadian to hold a cabinet post in Ontario. His role as Minister of Transportation placed him at the forefront of crucial decisions about the province’s infrastructure and transportation systems.
Takhar’s success in the Ministry of Transportation was a reflection of his expertise in management and governance. He brought a strategic vision to the ministry, working to improve transportation services while balancing the fiscal responsibilities of the province.
In 2007, Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar took on a new challenge as the Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and in 2008, his portfolio expanded to include Consumer Services. His work in these roles focused on empowering small businesses and ensuring fair consumer practices, key areas that drive economic growth and protect citizens.
Leadership Aspirations and a Legacy of Public Service
In 2013, Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar made a bold move in his political career by running in the Liberal leadership race to succeed Dalton McGuinty. Though his campaign was focused and innovative, and he secured a significant number of delegates, he ultimately endorsed Sandra Pupatello after the first round of voting. Despite the leadership race outcome, Takhar’s campaign showcased his ability to think outside the box and offer solutions to the challenges Ontario faced.
In February 2013, Premier Kathleen Wynne reappointed Harinder Jeet Singh Takhar as Minister of Government Services, where he also served as the Chair of the Management Board. Unfortunately, personal loss led him to resign in May 2013 after the passing of his mother. Despite stepping back from cabinet responsibilities, he continued to serve as an MPP until 2018, when he decided to retire from political life.
