GST Saving Festival: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled sweeping Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, describing them as a “next-generation reform” that will uplift India’s economy and directly benefit the middle class, youth, and consumers. Branded as the GST Saving Festival, the new tax regime comes into effect from September 22 and promises to lower prices of daily essentials, automobiles, medicines, and insurance products.

In his 19-minute national address at 5 pm, Modi said the reform is more than a tax cut — it is a transformation aimed at increasing purchasing power and fueling India’s consumption-driven growth.

“This reform is not only about reducing prices but about creating new opportunities. The savings of our middle class will increase, our youth will benefit, and the entire economy will gain momentum,” the Prime Minister declared.

GST Saving Festival: A People-Centric Reform

Highlighting the inclusive nature of the initiative, PM Modi emphasized that the GST Saving Festival will touch every household. By cutting rates on hundreds of essential goods, the reform intends to ease the financial burden on families while stimulating broader economic activity.

• GST has truly realized the dream of “one nation, one tax”.

• The burden of multiple indirect taxes and tolls has finally been dismantled.

• Daily essentials, insurance, and healthcare services will now be more affordable.

• A nationwide “GST Bachat Utsav” starting September 22 will boost savings during the festive season.

• The reforms will simplify doing business and attract more foreign investment.

• States will be equal partners in India’s development journey.

“Every rupee saved in the hands of a family becomes fuel for economic growth,” Modi said, linking the reform to India’s vision of becoming self-reliant under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Linking GST Savings with Aatmanirbharta

PM Modi underlined the importance of swadeshi and Made in India products, especially in the wake of global trade uncertainties and shifting economic equations with the United States. Without directly addressing the sharp hike in H-1B visa fees announced by US President Donald Trump just a day earlier, Modi stressed the need to strengthen domestic industries.

“Whatever we can make in our country, we must. From the small shopkeeper to the big business owner, everyone should proudly say, I sell swadeshi, I buy swadeshi,” he urged.

By combining GST cuts with the income tax relief announced earlier in the Union Budget, the government projects an additional ₹2.5 lakh crore in savings for Indian households this year. The Prime Minister linked these savings with a boost in local production, consumption, and job creation.

GST Saving Festival: India-US Trade Talks Continue

Even as the GST reforms dominate domestic economic headlines, international trade negotiations with the US remain a pressing backdrop. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is set to travel to Washington on September 22 for the next round of trade discussions. While tariffs and visa restrictions remain contentious issues, Modi chose to focus his Sunday address on internal economic resilience.

By placing the GST Saving Festival at the center of India’s growth narrative, the Prime Minister positioned the reform as a bridge between consumer relief and national progress.

The timing of the announcement—coinciding with Navratri, the start of India’s festive season—signals the government’s intent to merge cultural spirit with economic optimism. As Modi concluded:
