Essex Cricket Chairman Anurag Resigns After CV Scandal

Anurag Mohindru Disbarred: Essex Cricket Chairman Quits Over Oxford CV Scandal

In a dramatic turn of events, Anurag Mohindru has been disbarred by the Barristers’ Tribunal Service (BTS) after being found guilty of fabricating academic credentials to secure a role at a leading barristers’ chambers. The criminal lawyer and now-former chairman of Essex County Cricket Club (ECCC) stepped down on Sunday, following the tribunal’s verdict that he lied about studying at the University of Oxford.

The five-day tribunal heard that Mr. Mohindru exaggerated his qualifications while applying for tenancy at 23 Essex Street Chambers between late 2012 and early 2013. The Bar Standards Board (BSB) alleged that he falsely claimed to have studied biomedical science at Oxford University, later following it up with a CV stating he had pursued medicine at the university from 1993 to 1994 before continuing his education in the United States.

However, inquiries made with Oxford University revealed that there was no record of a student named Anurag Mohindru during that period.

Tribunal Findings and Financial Penalty

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) found that Mr. Mohindru had “deliberately exaggerated his academic achievements” to strengthen his tenancy application. The tribunal ordered him to pay £54,780 in costs, alongside his immediate disbarment.

Although Mohindru denied “knowingly” providing false information and insisted that the CV presented was co-created with at least two others, the tribunal upheld the allegations. A second professional misconduct charge was ultimately dropped.

Essex Cricket Board Responds

Following the tribunal’s outcome, Essex County Cricket Club released a statement confirming Mohindru’s resignation and expressing gratitude for his service:

“The board has decided that Jason Gallian will act as interim chair, whilst Vicky Ford will assume the position of interim deputy chair. We thank Mr. Mohindru for his leadership and significant contribution during his tenure.”

The board is expected to hold a formal meeting this weekend to discuss next steps and ensure the club’s governance remains unaffected by the controversy.
