e-Arrival Card India Replaces Paper Forms: New Digital Form

In a landmark step toward digitising immigration procedures, the Government of India has officially launched the e-Arrival Card India, effective October 1, 2025. This digital system replaces the traditional paper-based arrival card for most foreign nationals, aiming to simplify travel formalities, speed up entry clearance, and ensure greater accuracy in immigration data.

The move is part of India’s broader vision to modernise border management and enhance the travel experience for international visitors. By shifting from paper to digital, the government hopes to reduce queues, minimise manual errors, and provide a seamless welcome at Indian airports.

What is the e-Arrival Card India?

The e-Arrival Card India is a mandatory online form that foreign nationals, including Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), must complete before entering the country. It replaces the paper disembarkation form previously distributed on flights.

Unlike the e-Visa, which serves as an entry permit, the e-Arrival Card functions as a digital record of personal details, travel history, and purpose of visit. Travellers with valid visas will still be required to submit this new digital card.

How to Apply for the Card India

International travellers can complete the card online through three official channels:

• Indian Visa Online website

• Bureau of Immigration website

• Su-Swagatam mobile app

The form must be filled out within 72 hours prior to the scheduled arrival in India. Once submitted, travellers should download a digital confirmation. While a soft copy is generally sufficient, carrying a printed copy is strongly recommended in case of technical issues.

Information Required in the Card

When completing the form, passengers need to provide:

• Full name, nationality, and passport number

• Flight and arrival details

• Purpose of visit (tourism, business, study, etc.)

• Contact details and address in India

• Travel history of the last six days

• Emergency contact information

Accuracy is critical, as incorrect details may result in delays or legal complications at immigration counters.

Transition Period for Paper Forms

For the next six months, the traditional paper arrival form will continue to be accepted alongside the digital option. However, authorities and international embassies, including the US Embassy, encourage foreign travellers to choose the e-Arrival Card India for a faster and more efficient airport experience.

Difference Between e-Arrival Card and e-Visa

One common point of confusion is the difference between the e-Arrival Card India and the e-Visa. According to the US Embassy, the e-Arrival is not a replacement for a visa. Travellers still require a valid visa (electronic or stamped) to enter India, while the e-Arrival serves as an additional digital entry requirement.

Who is Exempt from the e-Arrival Card India?

• Indian citizens are not required to complete the form.

• Initially, OCI cardholders were exempt, but a revised update confirmed that they must also submit the digital form beginning October 1, 2025.
