IndiGo’s Pune to Dubai Flights Spark Interest but Visa Rules Cause Concern
The introduction of direct IndiGo flights from Pune to Dubai and Bangkok has sparked significant enthusiasm among travelers eager to explore these popular destinations. However, recent changes in Dubai’s visa requirements have emerged as a potential hurdle, especially for Indian tourists planning to stay with relatives.
New Visa Requirements: A Deterrent for Relatives’ Stay
Travelers intending to stay with family members in Dubai now face additional hurdles when applying for visas. The new rules mandate the submission of:
- Host’s rental agreement.
- Emirates ID.
- Residence visa copy.
- Contact details of the host.
For those choosing hotel stays, proof of hotel booking and return ticket details are compulsory. However, the financial strain of hotel accommodations, averaging between ₹20,000 and ₹1 lakh per night, often prompts Indian tourists to rely on relatives.
“This new rule could definitely prove to be a deterrent, particularly during the peak travel season,” said Nikhil Thakurdas, Director of Odyssey Tours and Travels.
Unclear Rules for Homeowners
Adding to the complexity is the lack of clarity regarding the required documentation for relatives who own homes in Dubai.
“The documentation needed to stay with relatives is quite cumbersome,” Thakurdas added. “It’s awkward to ask relatives for sensitive documents like rental agreements and residence proofs. This might force travelers to choose hotels, significantly raising costs.”
Impact on Dubai Shopping Festival
The timing of these changes coincides with the highly anticipated Dubai Shopping Festival (Dec 8-Jan 14), a major attraction for Indian tourists. With Dubai hotel rates already commanding a premium during this period, the changes could lead many to reconsider their travel plans.
Travel Companies and Tourist Voices
Santosh Gupta, owner of Shree Vinayak Holidays, highlighted the discomfort many hosts feel about sharing personal documents. “Many travelers are now hesitant to proceed with their plans. Christmas travel to Dubai might see a noticeable dip this year.”
Similarly, Abhishek Khanna, who planned a December trip to visit his aunt in Dubai, shared his frustration. “It feels like a breach of privacy to ask for sensitive documents like an Emirates ID and rental agreement. We’re now considering other Asian destinations instead.”
Zelam Chaubal, Director of Kesari Tours, pointed out additional hurdles, even for hotel stays. “Travelers need to provide their last three months’ bank statements with a minimum balance of ₹50,000, proof of hotel booking, and a PAN card copy. Indian tourists never faced such requirements before.”
Bangkok Gains Favor
While Dubai’s new regulations may deter spontaneous travelers, Bangkok has gained attention as an alternative. Direct flights from Pune and the availability of visa-on-arrival make Bangkok an attractive option for many.
“The introduction of direct flights from Pune has sparked interest in destinations like Bangkok,” said Thakurdas. “In contrast, the new Dubai visa rules could dampen spontaneous plans.”
Adaptation Amidst Challenges
Despite the hurdles, industry experts believe travelers will adapt to the new requirements. “Every country has its rules,” said Chaubal. “Though inconvenient, Dubai remains a popular destination, and tourists will adjust over time.”
