Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj: The Doctor Who Transformed Malaysian Politics

In a world often dominated by politics driven by power and personal ambition, Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and integrity. Born on 28 March 1955, this Malaysian politician and medical doctor has carved an indelible mark as a champion of social justice, healthcare equality, and workers’ rights.

His legacy is not merely about the positions he has held but the lives he has touched and the ideals he has upheld. From unseating political giants to dedicating his life to empowering marginalized communities, Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj embodies the spirit of true leadership.

A Doctor with a Mission

Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, as he is fondly called, graduated from the University of Malaya in 1981 with a medical degree. However, his ambitions went beyond the confines of hospitals and clinics. He envisioned a Malaysia where healthcare and education were accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status.

In 1986, Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj founded the Kalvikkuzhu group, an initiative providing free education to underprivileged children in Ipoh. His commitment to holistic care extended to his medical practice, earning him recognition from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) for his compassion and dedication.

The Political Giant Killer

Dr. Jeyakumar’s entry into politics was marked by tenacity and courage. Representing the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), which he helped found in 1998, he became the symbol of a movement advocating for the rights of workers, the poor, and the disenfranchised.

In the 2008 Malaysian General Election, Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj achieved a historic victory by unseating Samy Vellu, the long-serving President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), in the Sungai Siput constituency. This victory was not just a political triumph but a statement of the people’s demand for change.

Dr. Kumar served two terms as the sole Socialist Member of Parliament from 2008 to 2018, where he prioritized debates rooted in societal welfare and healthy discussions. He was even recognized by the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat as one of the top three MPs for his focus on public interests.

An Advocate for Human Rights

Dr. Jeyakumar’s political career has not been without challenges. In 2011, during the lead-up to the Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reforms, he faced detention under the Emergency Ordinance (EO) on accusations of waging war against the king and reviving communism. Spending 28 days in solitary confinement tested his resolve, but he emerged stronger, crediting the people’s unwavering support for his release.

His advocacy extends to issues like healthcare privatization, where he played a pivotal role in the Coalition against Healthcare Privatization, earning the SUARAM Human Rights Award in 2007.

A Legacy of Literature and Ideas

Dr. Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj is not only a man of action but also of ideas. He has authored seven insightful books, including Malaysia at the Crossroads and Alternative Vision for Malaysia. These works reflect his deep understanding of Malaysia’s socio-political landscape and his vision for a more equitable society.

A Life of Principles

One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Kumar’s life is his steadfast adherence to principles. In 1998, he rejected a royal promotion offered by the Sultan, underscoring his belief in humility and service over personal accolades.

As the current chairperson of PSM, Dr. Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj continues to champion causes that matter, from workers’ rights to healthcare reforms. His journey is a testament to the power of purpose-driven leadership in transforming societies.
