But passing the exam was only the first of many hurdles. At that time, obtaining a visa to the U.S. required either $700 in the bank or a sponsorship letter—neither of which Dr. Makhija possessed. And so, with just $25 in his pocket and courage in his heart, Dr. Makhija boarded a plane to New York City.

It was November when he arrived in the U.S.—a season of cold winds and even colder realities. He found work in a garment packaging warehouse, folding clothes and packing boxes. The work was grueling and the pay minimal, but he was grateful. The warehouse had phones—his golden ticket.

For almost six months, he juggled manual labor with relentless calls to hospitals across the country. Then finally, a breakthrough—he was accepted into a residency program at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York. It was the moment his dream began to take form.
From Residency to Rural America
After completing his internship and residency training at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, Dr. Kailash Makhija was offered an opportunity few others wanted—a private practice in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The town was rural, mostly White, with a population of just 50,000. The practice catered primarily to Medicare patients, and each consultation brought in only $9. But Dr. Kailash Makhija wasn’t driven by dollars—he was driven by duty.
He poured himself into his work, treating every patient with diligence and heart. He labored with mothers during childbirth, stayed up with the sick, and earned the trust of a community that had never seen many doctors of color.
“When I used to have patients come in for labor, I used to labor with them.”
