Early Life and Education of Dorine Chukowry
Dorine Chukowry’s early years in Port Louis were marked by a thirst for knowledge and a determination to excel. She began her primary education at the Loretto Convent of Port Louis and later moved to London College for her secondary education. However, her educational journey took a pivotal turn when she transferred to St. Bartholomew College, where she completed her Higher School Certificate in 1992.
Chukowry’s commitment to education didn’t stop there. She started working at St. Bartholomew College as a clerk, where her dedication and leadership skills quickly became evident. Her hard work and passion for education led to her promotion to School Principal, a role in which she significantly influenced the lives of many young students.
Academic Pursuits
While working at St. Bartholomew College, Chukowry continued to pursue her academic goals. She earned a Bachelor of Education, followed by a Master of Arts in Counselling and a Master of Science in Educational Administration and Technology. Entry into Politics
Dorine Chukowry’s political journey began in the 1990s when her husband joined the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM). Inspired by his involvement, she also joined the party, starting her political career through the Women’s Wing. By 2007, her dedication to the party and its causes earned her the position of Treasurer, marking the beginning of her significant political ascent.
Breaking Barriers
In 2012, Dorine Chukowry was elected as a Councillor at the Municipality of Port Louis. Her leadership qualities and dedication to public service quickly propelled her to the position of Deputy Lord Mayor.
On December 20, 2013, she made history by becoming the first female Lord Mayor of Port Louis, representing the MSM-MMM coalition. This achievement was a monumental milestone, not only for Chukowry but also for the women of Mauritius, symbolizing the breaking of gender barriers in politics.
Political Evolution
Dorine Chukowry’s political career has been characterized by resilience and adaptability. In 2018, after facing significant challenges and conflicts within the MMM, she made a strategic decision to join the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM). In the 2019 General Elections, Dorine Chukowry stood as a candidate for the MSM at Constituency No. 1 Port Louis West-GRNW. Her election as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) in the MSM-ML coalition government led by Pravind Jugnauth was a testament to her growing influence and leadership in Mauritian politics.
In August 2023, Dorine Chukowry was appointed as the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, a role that further solidified her position as a key figure in the government.
