Born with a natural inclination for problem-solving, Dinesh Manocha began his formal academic journey at IIT Delhi, graduating with a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering in 1987. Like many who dream beyond boundaries, he moved to the University of California, Berkeley—one of the world’s top research powerhouses—for his M.S. and Ph.D., completing them by 1992.
From the beginning, Manocha was driven not only by knowledge but by a powerful desire to apply computational thinking to real human problems. That desire became the heartbeat of his life’s work.
An Influential Career Across Academia & Innovation
Before joining the University of Maryland, Manocha spent many impactful years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he became an eminent figure in computer graphics, physics-based simulation, and geometric modeling. Over the years, he has supervised more than 65 master’s and Ph.D. students, many of whom are now global leaders—professors at top universities, innovators at Fortune 500 companies, and founders of influential research groups.
His journey is also a story of collaboration and shared purpose. He is married to Professor Ming C. Lin, his long-time collaborator and now the Elizabeth Stevinson Iribe Chair of Computer Science at UMD.
