Canada to Maintain: Canada’s immigration authority has affirmed its commitment to utilizing the six existing categories within the Express Entry system for candidate selection. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that it will persist in selecting candidates possessing specific qualifications to address identified economic needs and priorities.
Introduced in May 2023, Canada established six distinct categories for Express Entry draws, aiming to bolster the country’s economy by attracting skilled immigrants.

Eligibility for these programs is determined based on a comprehensive scoring system, which evaluates factors including work experience, age, language proficiency, occupation, and other criteria.
These factors are quantified and amalgamated to generate a Comprehensive Ranking System score. Subsequently, candidates scores are compared, with those having the highest scores being more likely to receive an invitation to apply.
Category-based selection draws are presently limited to candidates with existing Express Entry profiles, with the Canadian government conducting its initial Express Entry draw in June 2023.
The IRCC issued invitations to 1.5K Express Entry candidates in eligible healthcare occupations during this inaugural draw. Throughout the remainder of the year, the IRCC conducted an additional 17 draws, resulting in the issuance of 16K more invitations.
In 2024, there has been one category-specific selection draw so far, which invited 7K candidates possessing French language proficiency. This ongoing commitment to utilizing Express Entry categories underscores Canada’s strategy to attract skilled immigrants who can contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
