Canada Limits International Study Permits to 292K

Canada Puts Limit on International Students

Canada Limits : Canada has taken decisive steps to manage its study permit issuance, setting a cap of approximately 292K permits for undergraduate and postgraduate students in 2024 under the Trudeau government’s directive.

Recent revelations from Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, have brought to light the precise number of study permits available for college and undergraduate international students, aligning with the reported figure of 292K as detailed by the Globe and Mail.

This move follows Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) imposition of an overall cap on study permit applications, aimed at addressing what they perceive as unsustainable growth in the international student program.

The initial cap, initially set at approximately 360K, aimed to reduce the number of approved study permits by 35% over a two-year period, emphasizing the necessity of fortifying the system’s integrity.

However, Minister Miller clarified during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) that his authority may be confined to capping the number of applications processed by IRCC rather than the actual issuance of visas. The cap, strategically designed to manage intake levels, was distributed across Canada’s population centres.

Notably, Miller’s directives excluded certain educational programs, such as primary and secondary schooling, as well as master’s and doctorate-level university programs.

Consequently, an estimated 360K study permits are projected to be approved in 2024, assuming a 60% approval rate, as a result of these exclusions and the cap’s application strategy.
