The new accord, negotiated by the Canadian government, seeks to expand flight options and routes, with special attention given to potential routes to Amritsar. This initiative aligns with Canada’s commitment to fostering closer ties with India and meeting the travel needs of both nations’ citizens.

This development builds upon the open skies agreement reached between India and Canada in November 2022, which removed previous restrictions on the number of flights operated by designated carriers.

Prior to this agreement, airlines were limited to a maximum of 35 weekly flights between the two countries.

The latest agreement is poised to significantly benefit air travellers, enabling Canadian and Indian airlines to better serve the Canada-India air transport market. Ongoing discussions between officials from both countries are anticipated to explore further expansion opportunities.

Trudeau’s remarks at the Khalsa Day event also reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Sikhs in Canada and combating discrimination within the Sikh community.

Despite previous tensions stemming from allegations against India, Trudeau emphasized Canada’s dedication to protecting minority rights.
