Early Life and Education of Babulal Sethia
Born in Edinburgh to Babulal and Joan Sethia, Babulal Sethia’s path to medicine was influenced by his diverse upbringing. The son of a jute importer from a family of Indian Jains, Sethia’s early years were marked by a blend of cultural experiences and values.
He attended Rugby School and, at the age of 17, embarked on a year-long stint in the Merchant Navy as an assistant purser. This experience, particularly witnessing the horrors of Nigeria’s Biafran civil war, ignited his passion for a career in medicine.
Sethia pursued his medical education at St Thomas’ Hospital and Medical School in London, where he earned degrees in physiology and medicine. His dedication and talent led him to gain Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1981, marking the beginning of a distinguished medical career.
Medical Career
In 1975, Babulal Sethia began his journey in cardiac surgery as a House Surgeon in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. His career path included various house officer and registrar positions across the UK, as well as a brief tenure as a medical officer with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia in 1977/78.
By 1987, Sethia had established himself as a leading Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust, where he served as Clinical Director of Surgical Services from 1995 to 1999.
His expertise and leadership led to his appointment as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust in 1999, where he also serves as an educational supervisor for congenital heart surgery.
Sethia’s academic contributions include his role as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, appointed in June 2012. His international influence extends to his positions as Honorary Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem and past Honorary Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Bous Ismail Children’s Hospital in Algeria.
Over the years, Babulal Sethia has published extensively on congenital heart disease and delivered approximately 150 presentations to esteemed medical societies worldwide.
Humanitarian Work
Babulal Sethia’s impact extends beyond the operating room to the global stage, where he has been a beacon of hope for countless children and families. For over two decades, he has been involved in developing and delivering cardiac surgical training in developing nations.
Working independently and with organizations like the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) and the Chain of Hope Charities, Sethia’s humanitarian work focuses on providing clinical care to children in their home environments, training local medical staff, and developing sustainable healthcare services.
His recent efforts have been concentrated on the humanitarian needs in Palestine, where he served as President of the International Palestinian Cardiac Relief Organisation from 2007 to 2011. Sethia’s projects span across India, Mauritius, Egypt, Brazil, and Algeria, where he has been instrumental in developing local and national services for congenital heart disease.
In 2010, Sethia initiated a project to develop a congenital heart unit at the University of Jordan in Amman. His most recent endeavors include helping to establish cardiac surgical services for children in Gaza and Ramallah, demonstrating his continuous commitment to global health.
Leadership at the Royal Society of Medicine
Babulal Sethia’s leadership capabilities were recognized when he joined the Royal Society of Medicine Council in 2009. In 2010, he launched the Society’s Global Health programme, aimed at addressing critical health issues worldwide.
His presidency from 2014 to 2017 marked a significant milestone as he became the first President to serve a three-year term. Under his leadership, the Society expanded its reach and impact, reflecting Sethia’s vision of a more connected and compassionate global health community.
