Australia Student Visa: The Australian government has officially announced a steep rise in the Australian student visa fee, elevating it from AUD 1,600 to AUD 2,000, effective July 1, 2025. This bold move, confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs, has sent shockwaves through the global academic community, marking a significant moment for international students planning to study Down Under.

Unveiled as part of Labour’s pre-election budget strategy, the student visa fee increase is expected to generate AUD 760 million in revenue over the next four years. “The Visa Application Charge (VAC) for primary student visa applicants will be increased starting July 1, 2025, in accordance with the government’s election commitment,” a Home Affairs spokesperson told PIE News.

The increase is part of a broader governmental initiative aimed at strengthening the integrity, equity, and sustainability of Australia’s international education sector. However, while authorities champion the move as necessary for long-term reform, critics argue it places an undue burden on students and institutions alike.

Australia Student Visa: Comparative Costs Raise Eyebrows

The Australian student visa fee hike has now positioned the country as the most expensive among major English-speaking study destinations. For perspective, a student visa in the United States costs approximately USD 185, and in Canada, around CAD 150—significantly less than the new Australian rate.

This has sparked concern among students, particularly those enrolling in short-term English language courses. Providers of ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) have reported a noticeable drop in enrolments. The memory of a similar fee hike in 2024, which slashed English course admissions by nearly 50%, looms large.

“Many prospective students are now looking at Canada or the UK instead,” said the director of a leading Sydney-based language school. “Australia’s high visa costs are becoming a deterrent.”

Impact Already Being Felt

The financial strain is not theoretical—it’s real and immediate. Several English language schools have shuttered in recent months. The Perth International College of English (PICE), a well-regarded institution, closed its doors, citing unsustainable costs linked to visa processing. Other casualties include IH Sydney and The Language Academy, both of which had been fixtures in Australia’s education landscape for nearly a decade.

“Rising visa costs, tighter compliance requirements, and falling enrolments created a perfect storm,” explained a former administrator at IH Sydney.

Australia Student Visa: Exemptions and Political Backdrop

While students from Pacific Island nations and Timor-Leste remain shielded from the fee hike due to reduced visa charges, the majority of international applicants must brace for the increase.

The announcement also comes as part of a broader immigration overhaul. In 2025, Labour plans to cap international student numbers at 270,000, while the opposition is pushing for an even stricter ceiling of 240,000. This debate over migration policy coincides with a 12% year-on-year rise in international student arrivals, with nearly 200,000 entering Australia in February alone.

Tighter Rules Ahead

In addition to the Australia student visa fee hike, the government is introducing stricter requirements. New measures include enhanced English proficiency benchmarks and greater powers for authorities to deregister education providers who repeatedly fail to comply with quality standards.
