A spokesperson from Downing Street released a statement regarding UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s conversation with Prime Minister Trudeau, saying, “The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s position that all countries should respect sovereignty and the rule of law, including the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
He hoped to see a de-escalation in the situation and agreed to remain in contact with Prime Minister Trudeau on the next steps.”
Following this, Prime Minister Trudeau’s office in Ottawa provided an update on their conversation, emphasizing the mutual commitment to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and security of their citizens. They both underscored the need for de-escalation in this context and pledged to continue working together on global issues.
The roots of this diplomatic standoff trace back to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada in June, an incident that has triggered tensions between India and Canada. Last month, Justin Trudeau made a statement in the Canadian Parliament, alleging India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing.
In his statement, Trudeau claimed that Canadian security forces were “actively pursuing credible allegations” linking Indian government agents to the murder of Khalistan Tiger Force leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June. However, India strongly rejected these allegations, dismissing them as “absurd and motivated.”
